In the Richard Adams book, The Girl In A Swing, I am unsure how the wifes' name is pronounced. It's spelled Kathe with the double-dot thing over the a. I'm assuming it's a German name since the character is German. Could anyone help me with exactly how to pronounce that name?

The double dot thingy over certain vowels is called an umlaut.

It is pronounced just like the English Kathy or Cathy.

The double-dot thing indeed signifies "Umlaut"

you might pronounce it a bit like weather or special, but the first syllable is pretty long and stressed, the second is unstressed, almost swallowed.

It’s "Kääte"!

Helpful? I hope so! lol
