You should trim the dog's nails regularly. Some breeds nails grow faster than others, depending on what they were bred for. For example, my beagle's nails grow faster than my shih tzu's because beagles hunt and they dig, so their nails grow fast so they can dig when they hunt. If you don't feel comfortable in trimming their nails yourself, and I don't, because my dogs wiggle, you can take them to your vet, but if you have a Petsmart or a Petco in your area, they usually charge about $8 or $9 to trim nails. I know that my vet charges twice that, so I take them to Petsmart. If you chose to trim them yourself, make sure that you talk to someone at your vet's office, or at one of the pet stores, and make sure that you know how far to trim them, or else they will bleed. Good luck!

take it to the vet and have the vet show you how to trim the nails . You need to do this on a regular basis. But just because the nails are cut doesn't mean that it won't still be able to tear up your leather couch. You may just have to keep your dog off the couch

You can trim your dog's nails using any clipper available at a pet store. Most vets, groomers, and Petsmarts also trim dog nails for a nominal fee.
However, I actually prefer to Dremel my dog's nails. A Dremel is a small, electric rotary sander that you can use to file your dog's nails instead of clipping them. I got my Dremel tool for under $20 at Walmart.
This website explains how to use a Dremel. Read it through a few times before beginning the desensitization process.

The Dremel is one of the best things I've ever bought for my dog. I used to take my dog to the vet all the time, and at $18 per trip, it was getting pricey to keep his nails short. With my $20 Dremel, I can do his nails at home in a short amount of time, and it's relatively unstressful for my dog. I am also able to get his nails shorter than the vet ever could and I can smooth the edges out and make them nice and round so they don't scratch me or my furniture. I highly recommend taking the time to learn how to do this.

You should trim them. Before you do examine them very closely. You will see through the nail that there is a darker center. This is nerve and blood. DO NOT trim into that area as it will hurt the dog the same as if you trimmed your nails down past the quick. Just as long as you keep 1/8" between the quick and your trim it won't hurt them and you'll have the results you want.

You can ask the vet to trim your dogs nails, or show you how to do it. Also ask if your vet has used dremmel tools for nails. We used them at my clinic because you could round off the nail and get them a short as possible without quicking them. It is harder to quick them with a dremmel, but it can be done if not careful. If you have any questions you can email me.

You should clip your dog's nails regularly. The vet will do it or you can buy clippers at Wal-Mart and do it yourself. Letting your dog outside to dig or walking the dog on concrete/asphalt also helps to wear and smooth sharp nails.

well, you could clip them yourself, or you could take the dog to a groomer and have it done professionally.
if you decide to clip them yourself, use toenail clippers, and just clip them as you would your own nails. just take caution when doing this, because if you cut too far back, your dog may start to bleed. this isnt serious, but may cause your dog to be sore for a couple of days.

you can cut them, or take the dog to a pet groomer to get them cut and filed.
the more you walk your dog, the more the nails will file down or wear down .
