I have a sneaking suspicion that they had sex *before* she got pregnant. That being the way women become pregnant and all.

Absolutely . . . not!
both Joseph and Mary were from the line of David and Jesus and having sex with the mother of the Messiah would not have been even considered.

No,

[004:156] And because of their (Jews) disbelief and uttering against Maryam (Mary ['alayhas-salâm]) a grave false charge (that she has committed illegal sexual intercourse);

[004:157] And because of their saying (in boast), "We killed Messiah 'Îsâ (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allâh," – but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them [the resemblance of 'Îsâ (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man)], and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely, they killed him not [i.e. 'Îsâ (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary) ['alayhis-salâm]]:

[004:158] But Allâh raised him ['Îsâ (Jesus)] up (with his body and soul) to Himself (and he ['alayhis-salâm] is in the heavens). And Allâh is Ever All-Powerful, All-Wise.

[004:159] And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) but must believe in him ['Îsâ (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), as only a Messenger of Allâh and a human being] before his ['Îsâ (Jesus) ['alayhis-salâm] or a Jew's or a Christian's] death (at the time of the appearance of the angel of death). And on the Day of Resurrection, he ['Îsâ (Jesus)] will be a witness against them.

No. Since the Bible tells us that Jesus had brothers, they surely did after the birth of Christ, but not before.
