Of course it is. Would like to be called ugly to your face? Even if it's the truth, it's rude.
If your so shallow that you need to ask someone if their still fat, then I think you need evaluate your priorities. You don't have anything else to ask them or talk to them about?

It's definitely rude to come right out and say that. But, like many things, there are exceptions. if you're good friends, and they ask your opinion on their appearance, it would be ok to say "well you could stand to lose a few pounds", especially if you have advice on how this might be accomplished. Basically, the better you now someone, the more honest you can be with them, as long as you're not being hurtful.

Put yourself in that person's shoes. Would you like to be called fat? That is very rude. If you want to let someone know that they have gained weight, I am sure you can find a better way that that!!

Usually, yes it'd be rude. But close friends and family members who you're sure have your best interests at heart get a bit more leeway if they say it correctly. And doctors should be able to say bluntly something like "If you don't lose at least 50 pounds you're going to be doing more damage to your heart and cutting years off of your life. Here's the contact number of the local nutritionist." without getting sued.

There's a kind and sensitive way to say anything you want to say and I can't thing of any way that includes the word 'fat'.
I had a friend that fancied herself a fashion cop and could be quite hurtful with her blunt comments about my wardrobe selections and figure flaws.
Consideration for anothers feelings is always called for.

It really depends on the person. In most cases though i think it depends on the context of the conversation. Although a good rule of thumb is to just not say it in front of the person. It can be quite hurtful even if saying it does not seem to outwardly bother them.

I think its horrible. One of my friends got called fat to her face a lot in middle school. We're sphomores in highschool now, and because of people calling her fat, it made her go anorexic. Its very scary for me. Shes so thin now but she looks sick. Many teens become anorexic from being called fat.

Yes it is rude. Now call your friend and apologize. If you were the victim, I apologize and grant you permission to be very upset with that cruel witch.

If it is an unsolicited comment, then yes. But I am sorry if soemone asks me if they look fat in an outfit or something or asks me if they look like they have gained weight and the answer is yes, then I am going to tell them.

To their face or behind their back, I consider both rude, and the latter has the added component of cowardice.
