napa is more well known for cabs than sonoma county. it is warmer during the summer time in napa than sonoma. wineries I like in napa that have some nice cab are Stags Leap Wine Cellars, Beaulieu Vineyards, silverado vineyards,
As far as Alex Valley, try Chateau souverain, Chateau St. Jean, Geyser Peak, Rodney Strong, Stonestreet.

Alexander Valley Vineyards is a great visit. They take you down into their "cave" and let you drink right from the barrels..I've done this at other vineyards as well, but this was one of the better experiences that I had.
