If you want it short go for short layers and the 'messy' look. Our secretary here has her hair cut like that and it is soooo cute on her.... (she's 47). Nothing old lady about it.

You shouldn't get a hairstyle that's too girly or young, like, um, the side-bangs-and-straight thing. I think a slightly layered bob or big, wavy curls would look really sexy. If you have longer hair, put it in a messy bun or low ponytail.

Do you have a celebrity or a friend whose hairstyle you like? Take her picture with you to the salon and then ask for the opinion of your stylist. I am assuming that you have a good stylist. If not, ask a friend whose has good hairstyle to give you the name of her stylist. She is the best person to suggest what will work for you.

It looks really cute when it's cut short and flares out. If you get your hair cut like this then ask for a razor cut at the end

I guess it really depends on your face shape and all...whether you like bangs or not.
One of my favorite actresses Rene Russo who is also 52 beleive it or not (she doesn't look it) has a really sassy, pretty hairstyle.
