There are a LOT of different kinds of chemical peels, from glycolic acid (weaker) to TCA (clinical strength, used more for serious problems). Of course, they'll be good for acne (although, if that's the only indication, I would opt for more along the glycolic acid end) because they'll take off a lot of the dead layers of skin that are full of impurities and such, and the new skin will have fewer of those.
Many of the stronger peels are used for things like age spots, wrinkles, and other deeper impurities, but acne and acne scars are less noticeable after one as well. Before going to something like a peel, though, I would discuss extractions with a dermatologist.
Chances are, if you have severe enough acne, there'll be a number of options open to you that you can only take through a dermatologist. Your derm will be able to tell you more about what you can do and what you'll be looking at in terms of cost. For example, while insurance companies NEVER cover chemical peels for acne, they may cover extractions or medications, both topical and oral, and the derm office should be able to help you with those. But the dermatologist is going to be your best resource for that.

It exfoliates (airs), cleans, and smooths the skin. And yes, it is very good for acne since it helps remove impurities under the skin.
Talk to your dermatologist. He will give you some ointment that has a specific amount of glycolic acid in it that's good for self-application and will be a good preparation for a professional chemical peel.
I can't give you a cost, since each case is different (from a face peel to a whole body peel) and doctors charge based on several factors including the area in which they practice. In the New York metro area, it was about $1,000 for a full facial peel.

While there is no cure for acne, there are several options for effective control and treatment of the problem. Have you seen a dermatologist? Have you discussed Accutane? If you opt for a chemical solution, suggest you have it done by a medical professional, those chemicals can scar you for life if someone applies them incorrectly.
