The Physiological Theory -- Our bodies induce yawning to drawn in more oxygen or remove a build-up of carbon dioxide. This theory helps explain why we yawn in groups. Larger groups produce more carbon dioxide, which means our bodies would act to draw in more oxygen and get rid of the excess carbon dioxide.

Because we THINK it is contagious. If you don't believe it, you won't be affected by others yawning.

Did you ever read that Dr. Seuss book "The Sleep Book?" My dad tried to read it to us when we were kids and we would all fall asleep from yawning! It's a lot of fun once in a while.

there was a MythBuster's episode about this. They found that it's actually not contagious, but more the power of suggestion.
