I did karate for a year, but couldn't concentrate during gradings etc, I really want it as a really good fitness routine.

You have a few choices, you can do kick boxing, not a hard core martial arts, but still a martial arts and no rank involved or testing other than in the ring.

the other would be tai chi or qui qong, but both are an internal martial arts and you may find not usefull in defending yourself where most use these two for healing internally.

SOME Mixed schools will teach grappling, self defence and some form or MA like Karate or such and have no testing but those are rare.

Kick boxing is a great fitness routine.

a martial art where there are no tests.. you want kickboxing or boxing... you learn technique and improve on it.

in most western style kickboxing there are not belts, just beginning, intermediate and advanced.

and you progress thru those ranks at an individual rate.

kickboxing is an excellent form of exercise as well as martial art. you work on cardio as well as aerobic and anerobic fitness.

it's fastpaced and technical, and can actually be an effective form of self defense.

you might not find the same history and tradition in kickboxing as you do in other arts, but if that's not your main concern this may be the art for you.

hope this helps! good luck!

If you don't want "tests or anything" you don't want a Martial Art. Learning to handle the stress of testing is part of the package.

"Most" mixed martial arts (MMA) schools do not have rankings. Now, some are really rough. look around and find the level of toughness you are interested in. When I started I certainly did not have the toughness I have now. Start slow and increase as you are ready.

Take up a non-traditional martial art. That doesn't have tests or ranks.

Good fitness routine + no tests = Cardio Kickboxing.

I'd recommend Krav Maga, the Israeli martial art. It's very aerobic, useful in a pinch, and there is no great preoccupation with ranking.

you dont have to take gradings for any martial art you want to do. Its only there to demonstrate the skills you have gained. your local instructor should allow you to attend and train without these and if he doesnt look elsewhere cos their only after making more money off you.

there is no point of martial arts if there is no tests when u fight in the street, ring or cage it is a test when u break boards and bricks they r tests when u pratice there r tests if u don't like there "test" then don't do any martial arts.

Tai Chi is a good one. There are no belts/test and you get a very good workout. Also, there are practical applications to every move in case you ever need to use them.
