In my bedroom I have an a/c unit on the wall. It's brown and sits about a foot from the ceiling. It sticks out about a foot and is about 2 feet wide. Did I mention it's brown?:( I rent so I cannot remove or paint it, or perm. cover it. I have to be able to use it in the summer because it's the only a/c I have in the entire apartment. My bedroom isn't really decorated yet, so I'm not too restricted on coloring. 2 walls are white (one of which being the a/c wall) and 2 are gry/wht paneling. I know, gross. My carpet is dusty med to dark blue. I have a dark wood bed and that's about it. I cannot paint the walls, but I could possibly put fabric up? So, what I need is some sort of really inexpensive way to cover this. I mean REALLY inexpensive way. Also, if you have any decor ideas for the rest of my room, I'm pretty desperate there, too.

Without knowing where it is located in the room, suggestions may not work. Two ideas spring to mind.

First possibility is to take the most imposing piece of furniture you have and overpower the eyesore. A highboy, wardrobe, or tall chest of drawers with an attractive basket sitting on top -- or a lacquered box, potted plant or vase of flowers. You might secure a table runner or nice looking piece of fabric to hang in front of the AC to make an back drop for your basket or vase. You could stack furniture to achieve the "commanding size" you are after.

Second idea is to incorporate a draped head board -- quasi canopy to camouflage the AC unit if the bed can be placed under the AC unit.

Would a shoji screen or Chinese screen work?

Alas, I wish I knew more. It sounds like an interesting challenge. Good luck.

Make it into an interesting and creative focal point for the room. Buy some solid colored tie-back curtains. Install a curtain rod on the wall above the air conditioner. Use long hooks for the curtain rod, long enough to bring the rod out about a foot. Place the drapes on the curtain rod over the air conditioner and tie them back about half way down the wall, so the drapes cover the air conditioner at the top, but separate at the bottom. Install a simple wooden shelf where a window sill would be. Put a fake plant or dried flowers on the window sill. You could also hang a picture with an outdoor scene on the wall behind the shelf. Obviously, when you run the air conditioner in hot weather you would have to either remove the curtains or tie the back more so the cold air is not obstructed.

I would tack to the ceiling some cheesecloth gauze material around it , use the same material as a sheer panel in your windows, then use a strip of the gauze like a bow tie on your pillows of your bed, and a larger piece as a throw at the end of your bed. It's very inexpensive but flows and is feminine. It will create a lighter look.
