Proper black Russian is Vodka and Tia MAria/Kahlua.
Often you will see it sold topped up with cola and with a guiness top.
This is delicious.
1/2 pt glass. Large vodka, regular kahlua, coke to almost the top and then just open the guiness tap to give it an Irish coffee type top. Truely wonderful!

2 part Vodka, 1 part Kaluha, over ice in a short glass.
By adding cola you can make it a long drink but this is a common derivation of the drink and would not win you any admirers in reputable establishments. Likewise Tia Maria is a modern alternative most likely brought about through it being more commonly found in bars and pubs. The sweetness of Tia Maria compared to the more subtlety one of Kalhua is not to everyone's taste.
By adding cream a White Russian is created. This can be substituted by milk as made popular by The Big Lebowski where the title character refers to them as "Caucasians"

Its quite easy !!! you take 1x measure of Tia Maria plus 1x measure of Vodka pour both into a tall glass with plenty of ice fill with Coke and stir with a swizzle stick Mmmmmmmm
