OK, I am going to say this once. There is currently NO discrete 7.1 consumer market product or format. The maximum for the consumer market is 6.1, and that is ONLY DTS. Dolby's format is NOT discrete, it is matrix. The extra speaker in the 7 channel system plays the SAME information as the discrete 6th speaker.. Enough said.

Most of the new HD DVDs are in 7.1 surround sound.

Yeah, most of the new movies. But best to check on the cover or with the distributor. Also depending on the movies, just because it says 7.1 doesn't necessary mean it will sound better than a 5.1.

JP is absolutely right - true 7.1 sound does not exist.

It is possible to have 7 (or more...) speakers plus a subwoofer, but that is still only 6.1 sound with one channel being fed through two speakers.

Any Blu-Ray Disc or HD DVD will be in this format. But you will need one of these players to be able to play one of them.
