All in all, I have found any GM product to be a good reliable car, my whole family has GM's ranging from 79k miles to 280k miles. and all of them run like they were pulled off the lot yesterday!!!! Granted you must keep them well managed, ie regular oil changes, we have the tranny fluid done every 100k miles and at least at 125k we get the radiator flushed.
Seriously though, whatever car you end up considering, also consider who drove it last and definately invest in a carfax report!

Cheap to run and powerful will not mix well. There are however a few cars that are good retail buys around $10K and will give you some warranty as well. Here are some I'd suggest:
2003-2005 Hyundai Elantra
2005-2006 Ford Taurus
2005 Chevy Classic
2004-2005 Chevy Cavalier
You can find one of these cars most likely with remaining factory warranty. You could go and buy a higher miled Toyota or Honda, but you'd be missing warranty. And believe it or not, imports break as often as domestics and they cost more to repair. I included the Elantra because it's a good buy with warranty and I've seen the Hyundai's to be every bit as good as the other two big imports.
I assume you're financing and these later model, lower miles vehicles will be better favored by the banks, meaning lower payments.
Plus, if financing, I always suggest something with warranty. It is difficult to make a car payment each month AND have to occasionally pay a repair bill on top of that.
Good luck in deciding. It's a fun thing buying your first car.

99+ Mustang. V6 has about 200hp and will get 20-22mpg. The GT has 260hp and will get 18-20mpg. Both are great dependable cars. Look good too.
