It's important to define your interests in a compact camera. What kind of photographer are you? For the *typical* point-and-shoot purpose, I would give serious consideration to the Fuji F30. The G7 is really *not* the best choice for many casual photographers, who primarily want P&S functionality. It's much more flexible than the Fuji. but the Fuji has better in-camera features to make great looking pics.

If you're interested in slr-like controls the G7 is attractive. If you would actually bother to put an external flash on the g7 hotshoe, it would make the G7 a very versatile camera. You get *control*...but you don't magically avoid the limitations of a very noisy 10mp sensor. You don't avoid the limitations of relatively slow lens.

These days, almost any camera can take decent shots at low-iso settings, with lots of light. The Fuji superCCD sensor is much MUCH better than the G7's 10mp sensor at low-light pics, and that sets it apart. And the casual p&s user will find them more useful without post-processing, whereas the typical G7 buyer can't wait to get their hands on it in photoshop to do serious post-processing.

As for the benefits of image stabilization, IS buys you about 1/30th of a second in shutter speed. Shots you could hold steady at 1/60, you can now hold steady at 1/30th of a second. But that same benefit is given on the F30 by the fact that you can push the camera to ISO800 and get equivalent photos to the G7's ISO200.

And go to DPReview and check out there reviews. They don't do a head-to-head comparison of the G7 and F30, but they do a comparison of the A640 which shares much of the same processor, sensor, lens, and features of the G7.

All depends on what your priorities are. The F30 is much better in low light, and is much smaller. the G7 is more feature laden. So- if you spend more time fiddling with the camera than taking photos (er... like me) then the G7. If you want a truly top of the line point and shoot, that's great for social occaisions and poor lighting situations, then definately the F30 (which, BTW, can be had for about $215 after rebate).

In good light- the G7 has marginally better image quality (at low ISO)- but you really need to look closely. You won't notice the resolution difference in even an 8x10 print.

To me, the G7 has it all over the F30. First and foremost, the Fuji does not have an optical viewfinder. You'll go through batteries much faster without an optical viewfinder.

The Canon lens has twice the zoom (210 mm vs 108 mm) and image stabilization. The Canon flash is about 25% brighter. The Canon allows you to choose between three different metering patterns and the Fuji only offers one averaging pattern. The Canon uses cheaper, easier to find SD memory cards.

The Canon is actually cheaper per pound, too. (haha!)

If it were me, I would get the Canon. Canon manufactures their own processor, the Digic IC. It is the fastest on the market and has been for a couple years.
Canon optics are phenomenal and their customer support is the best for any consumer electronics.

i have seen reviews and sample photos... i rather would have the f30

g7 is not bad but for the price it offers very very little of a advantage to the $300 rande cameras

g7 is for those who need a hotshoe... but theres the sp350 for that even
