Your question should read why does American society not like pagans. You can go almost anywhere else in the world and the word pagan, witch, wizard, spiritual practitioner etc are accepted as a choice these particular people make. The british royals consult with pagans all the time, Pople John Paul had a cleansing done by a healer when he was in Mexico. A true pagan does not go around wearing the uniform of what Americans recognize as pagans. The uniform wearing is done by the younger set as a showing off or a boasting of their being different. Most real pagan, noone outside of their inner circle know who they are. New Orleans is the center of magic in this country and it is widely accepted by the people there because it has always been a part of their lives. In fact there Christians and pagans have intermingled their beliefs and that sits fine with all of them. The haters are the sheep of Christianity who have no minds of their own and rely upon the word of a leader who probably isnt qualified to baby sit a cat.

I am a Pagan, and I was not aware that society, as a whole, hated me. I do know this, though:
People hate what they fear or don't understand.
I think this is funny, too, because we Pagans are about as harmless a group of people as you'll ever find. We are all about nature and the elements; we are about Love and cooperation. Pagans, like myself, embrace the ideals of Christianity well, but not as a religion, but more as an idea and set of workable ways to be at peace and as one with the planet. This is pretty much what Jesus was trying to promote, too. Was He a Pagan? I think so, in essence, if not in name.
The only 'organized' religion I know that 'hates' Pagans are Catholics. Catholics hate everyone...including other Catholics. Pagans love all, including and especially, other pagans.
So why would you hate a Pagan? Because we believe things different than you? Tsk Tsk Tsk...such a pity there are still folk like you here in this enlightened world.

I don't hate pagans. I have had friends that were pagans.
I do however worry about the choice you have made, especially since no pagan has ever been able to give me a logical reason for being a pagan other then The fact that they like it.

Does society really hate pagans? If so maybe it's ignorance. What's a pagan? I'm an educated person and I admit I don't understand every obscure religious practice. Is paganism a religion? I have mental image of barefoot people with flowers in their hair skipping throught the woods and holding hands and hugging trees. Am I close? Help us out here. What's a pagan?

Why would you think "society" hates Pagans when the largest holidays participated in by "society" today have Pagan traditions and symbols incorporated into most of the activities/decorations?

1. It's 'does', not 'dose'.
2. They don't. Society in general has no feeling about pagans one way or the other. Christians don't like them, but all the rest of us are fine with them.

Because of the ridiculous claims by some that we chop people's heads off at Halloween and use dead animals in our rituals.
Animals, people and all of nature is sacred to pagans. But that doesn't make a good Hollywood movie, so instead we're portrayed as blood-sucking puppy killers, and there are enough idiots in society who actually believe it.

Personally, I LOVE the Pagan/Wiccan religion because along with Buddhism it is one of the few religions that truely teaches peace and gives appreciation for nature and its inner workings. It's Christian society that looks down on pagans.
Filledbabe, how many atrocious things have Christians done in the past. For you to say such a thing shows your ignorance and hypocrisy!!

If you think we're persecuted, consider this:
No one in America has dragged a pagan* to death, chained to a truck speeding down a dusty back road in Texas. But that's how James Byrd Jr. died in 1998 because he was black.(1)
No one in America has beaten a pagan nearly to death and then tied them to a fence and left them to die. But that's how Matthew Shepard died, also in 1998, because he was gay.(2)
No one in America has raped and murdered a pagan. But that's how Brandon Teena died in 1993 because he was transgendered.(3)
Furthermore, we pagans do not have a website of all the people in modern times who have been murdered for being neopagan.(4)
Don't talk to me about "The Burning Times", or accused witches in Africa who are primarily victims of the hysteria of others and have never cast a spell in their lives. The fact that you can walk down a street, even in small town America, and the worst you probably have to deal with is someone saying something stupid, means that you have it pretty good. You don't have to worry about store employees following you around making sure you don't shoplift because you're pagan. You don't have Congress voting on whether it's legal for you to be able to marry the person you love. You don't have to worry about dying for your beliefs in this place and time. Someone pointing and laughing at your pentacle doesn't count as persecution.
(*Keep in mind, too, that by pagan I mean neopagan, not memebers of Afro-Caribbean religions, or any other non-Christian or non-monotheistic religion. I mean neopagan as in Wiccan, Druid, etc.)

Society doesn't hate Pagans. Most of the people who learn my religion don't seem to care one way or another, nor do they try to convert me. The only people who seem to care are the hardcore religious zealots who see Pagans as evil incarnate.
