avi files are a video format. iso files are a disk image. iso is a type of disk format.

Save the avi file on your hard disk. Set up your burner to create a video DVD. When it asks for the source, aim it at your avi file.

An avi file is a movie format whereas an iso file is a disc image file. You need some sort of CD/DVD creation program like 'sonic', 'Pinnacle Studio', 'MS Movie Maker' that allows you to import an avi file and then burn it to disc.
