Don't listen to them... I have used pen, colored pencils (black, green, blue), and non No 2 pencils on the scantrons and they all were graded correct...

What do you mean? What do you want to know about #2 pencils?

Ah, I remember well the #2 pencils for my ACT Tests, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and other color in the "balloon" multiple choice questions.

I think, the #2 stands for the lead content. If you have H on your pencil, that means the lead is hard. If you a B on your pencil, it means the lead is soft. B pencils also tend to be darker in lead color, while the H pencils are lighter.

So, the combination of HB make #2! A happy medium so to speak.!

So, bubble away with your beloved #2 pencil! ;)

The other numbered pencils are darker or lighter and a #2 is the ideal hue for the standardized tests students take in school. it is read by machines best. Good question. I have thought about why a #2 all my school life! haha ;-)

Idk...but since they are so freakin' important and great, they should be changed to "#1" pencils. I'm all about mechanical pencils lol = ).

It all has to do with the softness of their lead/graphite. If you ever look at a professional set of drawning pencials it'll make more sense.

They write clear enough and are hard enough. #3 is too hard, good for drafting because they will keep sharp for a longer time. #1 is too soft, will write darker but the point will break easily.
