I have a question.

My friend owns 3 cats. Each time I go to his house I end up with itchy nose, throat and one of my eyes will pretty much close up and go really red. Is there anyway to stop this from happening each time I visit. I find it quite annoying and embarrasing.

Thanks for your comments.

just take medication, see a doctor, it sounds like its pretty bad so you might have to use pills, eye drops and nose sprays, but it is definatly worth it

Tell your friend to buy Allergy Relief from Cats. I always mention this product when people come on here saying they have cat allergies. My story is my boyfriend was allergic to my cat. Getting rid of Abby was not an option. I always said I could find a way out to that problem. Well, I did. I found Allergy Relief from Cats. You may find it at any pet supermarket and it is not expensive and it works. Just moisten a cloth with this simple solution, then rub the cat with the cloth in a forward and backward motion. It is not necessary to saturate the fur. Just use enough product to dampen the cat's fur to the skin. Apply it once a week and your friend and mom are all set. (Gosh I sound like I'm in the middle of a commercial) Erase the idea that having a cat will cure cat allergies although for some people it works. But what are the odds, right. What your friend wants is something she can rely on, and not the idea of waiting for some day to see a miracle with the mother and the cat. Tell your friend to take action and brush that cat every other day outside the house if possible, bathe him every month, and apply this product I just mentioned once a week. Mommy's allergies will be gone as long as the cat is treated like the above.

Alavert Allergy Medicine

Seeing you have an "occasional" allergy (meaning you do not live with cats and only visit them occasionally) an over-the-counter allergy product should be sufficient for you. Alavert is a quick-acting allergy relief product that should work for you.

My husband takes this once per week when he takes our kids to piano lessons. He is only allergic to cats, and the piano teacher has 3 of them. It is not cost effective for him to be on prescription allergy meds daily (at a cost of $20-50/month of copays) for one day per week.

I on the other hand suffer from multiple severe allergies and take a daily prescription allergy medications.

Alavert is about $1.00 per pill or less. One box should last you quite a while!! There are other name brands and store-brands (generic) available as well: Claritin, Claritin-D, Sudafed Allergy, etc.

Again, if your only reaction is to cats, don't waste your time going to see an Allergist. Try over-the-counter medications first. You should get plenty of relief. If not, then you can spend the $$ and see an allergist.

You can see your allergist and talk to him about taking a non-drowsy allergy medication. You could also talk to your friend about using an allergy reducer before you come over (like Febreeze allergy reducer). My mom is allergic to cats and she can come to my house and be ok for a while just so long I spray the allergy reducer and vacuum throroughly before she comes over.

consult an allergist. You definitely have a cat allergy. over the counter allergy medicine will offer some relief, but will make you groggy. Prescription medicine doesn't have the same degree of side effects.

An allergy is an abnormal reaction to ordinarily harmless substance or substances. These sensitizing substances, called allergens, may be inhaled, swallowed or come into contact with the skin. When an allergen is absorbed into the body it triggers white blood cells to produce IgE antibodies

You might consider taking an over-the-counter "non-drowsy" allergy medication before you go to your friend's house. I'm allergic to cats, and it works nicely for me.

Try and take some benadryl before you go over. It might help and it might not. Either that or ask him to put the cats in a room or something. You would think he would anyway if he knows you are alergic.
