OTHER. I HAVE HAD OVER A DOZEN ARTICLES WRITTEN ABOUT CASES I WAS INVOLVED IN (LONG TIME AGO) AND THEY NEVER EVER GOT THE STORY RIGHT. THERE WERE DETAILS OF THE INCIDENTS THAAT NEVER REALLY HAPPENED OR WERE DISTORTED TO THE POINT OF BEARING ANY REASONABLE RESEMBLANCE OF THE TRUTH. I WAS IN VIETNAM FOR QUITE AWHILE AND THE ARTICLES DESCRIBING THE ACTIONS I WAS INVOLVED IN WERE SO DISTORTED THAT I HARDLY RECOGNIZED THEM--AND I WAS THERE ON THE SPOT AT THAT TIME. ALL THE GOOD THINGS WE DID NEVER EVEN WERE A BLIP ON THE MEDIA RADAR SCREEN. THATS WHY YOU HAVE A WHOLE GENERATION NOW OF VETS THAT TOTALLY DISBELIEVE ANYTHING THEY HEAR OR READ. I ONCE CALLED AN ANTI-WAR COLUMNIST AT THE ST. LOUIS POST DISPATCH TO QUESTION AN ASCERTION HE MADE IN ONE HIS ARTICLES. HE STATED THAT NO NATIONAL GUARD UNIT EVER SERVED IN THE VIETNAM WAR. I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS AT THAT VERY MOMENT READING A NON-FICTION BOOK ABOUT MANY OF THESE UNITS WHO SERVED IN THE WAR-WITH DISTINCTION. HIS EXACT WORDS TO ME WERE "YOU CANT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ." ITS PRETTY HARD TO TAKE THE NEWS MEDIA SERIOUSLY WHEN A NEWSPAPER MAN SAYS SOMETHING LIKE THAT. AND HE IS STILL THERE SPEWING HIS GARBAGE. NUFF SAID.

Because People LIE. Unless you know a person's intentions or motives behind the words they are spouting out of their mouths, you don't know if they are being honest or lying to you or just simply ignorant.

Trust Yourself.

I'm answering this question because I trust myself and I find it difficult to stomach the idea that people are all trusting and all sheep. I believe that people want MORE information, not less information. I give what I have to offer on here. It makes me feel good when I get a thumb's up, but it also makes me feel good when I get a thumb's down because though people don't agree with me, at least they read what I had to say and I RESPECT THAT.

Because otherwise they'd be credulous fools. If you believed with all of your heart everything anyone told you, you'd believe a hundred different conflicting things. People have to have credulity and have to choose between who those who they think are trustworthy and those who they think are not - and that varies from person to person. Some people trust their family, some trust their government; others do not, because they believe that each has their own agenda which they may be lying in order to serve.

7. have own belief system - taught by parents or respected adult. I was always told to "Believe half what you read and nothing you hear until it can be proven."

That leaves room for belief of what you hear, but not without verification or evidence. Unfortunately there are people who have an agenda and want you to only believe their side of the issue. They mislead, confuse, mitigate, overlook, and sometimes outright lie to persuade. That causes mistrust in others who are not trying to push an agenda. Great question!

All of the above. I think many people like to gather information from multiple sources, and make up their own minds, before deciding to believe what someone tells them. The person telling you something, might have their own agenda as well, and may not be giving you the whole story.

As Ronald Reagn said "Trust, but verify"

all of the above plus two reasons:

1. Pride, people are egocentric to pretty much the extreme

2. Reputation, in and out of the family, people want to show that they are the same as everyone else, and no matter what they really believe, they follow others ideals so they can feel good about them selves
