It almost sounds like a humming noise or maybe clearing throat a little. I dont know how else to explain it. It started about a month ago, I noticed he did it more in situations he might be nervous or worried about. It has gotten worse and worse. He does it constantly. I've been trying to ignore it because I didnt want to make him feel bad and I thought it would quit. He makes this noise all the time like every couple seconds. Other children, teachers, every one has been commenting on it lately and it's starting to really upset him and me. He says he cant help it. Any ideas?

You need to take him to see a doctor soon! They'll first want to rule out any actual physical problems such as asthma, etc that could be causing the noises. If he has some kind of respiratory condition it could be aggravated by the nervousness. Barring any physical problems, he'll need to see a psychiatrist to find out what's bothering him. This behaviour is being caused by something.. it may just seem like a normal situation to you, but your son may be very worried about something else and the little things compound that and make his stress level worse. They should be able to find a way to help him cope with his stress that doesn't aggravate him as much.

It could be transient tics. My son did the same thing. He went through a bunch of different noises and movements when he was stressed.

Don't yell at him or bring it more to his attention because he's right, he can't help it. I was so afraid that it was Tourette's. We went to a neurologist and everything, she said that it could be Tourette's or it could be transient that would go away. I was devastated when I thought he had Tourette's.

He's 14 now and hardly ever has noises or movements. Every once in a while I notice a tic, sometimes moreso when he plays video games, but they are 99.9999 percent gone, thank God.

Ask his pediatrician about tics. There are some good sites online about them too.

Believe me, I know exactly what you're going through. He was blessed with teachers and other children who rarely said anything about his tics, people can be so cruel. After discussing with your doctor, maybe you can have a chat with the teachers and tell your son if anyone says anything about his noises that he can't help it, it's just something his body is doing. That was what he did tell other kids who said something and then they didn't care after that.

PS - just so you know, the noises can change weekly. IT seemed every week there was a different tic. Either a strange noise or a strange eye blinking or neck jerking....it broke my heart. But like the above posted said, it will go away. I feel so bad for your little guy and for you because I know as a Mom, you're heart is breaking for him too. But it will be ok. Really!

Prayers to you both.

It sounds like a Tourette verbal tic. Is there anyone in the family with obsessive compulsive disorder, ADHD, severe anxiety or depression? These kind of disorders are all related.
TS, OCD, etc runs in my family big time. I take Cymbalta with good results. My sister takes the nonamphetamine Strattera for ADD.
The worst symptom of these disorders is mind racing. Your mind won't shut off enough to rest. These medicines help with relaxation.
Here is a book that just reading the review should help understanding TS:http://www.hopepress.com/html/tourette_syndrome_and_human_be.html
(Most common tics: rapid eyeblinking, twisting neck, humming, sniffing, shaking hair out of eyes)

first of all, its OK.

the first thing i can stressssssss toyou is to NOT make a deal of this at all. it will hurt his self esteem and make it worse.

my son has tics as well. that is what they are called.
Motor tics and you can look it up on line. there is MUCH information about this.

let everyone comment if they want. your child cannot help it, and he will grow out of it most likely.

My son who is 11 has had them since he was 7 and sometimes he blinks , twitches his neck like its stiff, or mumbles and grumbles with weird noises. the thing is, his tics go from one to the other and at this time of year they are usually present.

GOOD STRESS BAD STRESS. doesn't matter. it can make it come out on them.
my son sees a neurologist yearly for this and he is just monitered.

its SO upsetting to the parent to see this and for that, i have tears in my eyes for you becuase i deal with this too.

My husband had this when he was small. he grew out of it. but when we were getting married, he got a blinking tic for a short while.

what happens to your son is an overflow of dopamine is happening in his brain and its causeing these motor tics.

Just ignore it. and it will go away! i promise!

is there any ocd in your family? that is present in my family (husbands side) and that is sometimes a cause or related in some way....email me anytime.

as for your son? if its bothering him, just explain it to him that everyone has little quirks and this happens to be his. and to not worry about it. trust me, i thought i was going to teach my son how to stop and he couldn't. i just made it worse.

proof is in the pudding too. my younger son has it too! (lucky us) and we make NO deal out of it, and his tics don't last as long

stay away from caffeine, and antihistamines. they seem to make them worse.

sounds like my 6 yr old he may have tics which are early signs of tourette's I didn't know that the little things our adopted son did were tics I thought he was trying to annoy me. clearing his throat, chewing his shirt, eating paper, making this weird kind of a squeal in his throat sound, picking at everything and chewing everything, rolling his eyes and making other facial movements. DONOT make any comments to him just in case. check out this site!!! i hope it helps!

My niece would do this thing where she would tug at her ear when she got nervous my sister was always getting after her and she developed that tick but my sister realized she was making her kid all nervous stopped yelling and it went away. I also have a similar problem with my eyebrows twitching it's so embarassing I have had it for years but I just take a deep breath talk to myself in my head to calm myself and it goes away. He probobly just needs to do something like that to relax himself.
