It depends on which year and/or models you are comparing.
The 2007 Shelby GT500 Mustang has 500hp, while the 2007 Corvette ls2 has 400hp.
So in that area the mustang is more powerful.
The Shelby Mustangs performance wise give the vette a good run for the money.
The mustangs are heavier, Vettes are fibreglass and 2 seater vs 4seater,. The vettes also have a wider wheelbase and lower chassis which makes their stability superior to the mustang.
Price wise they are both WAY up there, but the vettes cost more. And repairs, parts, etc on the vette are higher.
I owned a 84 vette and I had a 66 gt mustang. The mustang had more HP and on the drag strip could probably take the vette. BUT on the road the vette would leave the mustang behind at every turn. If I had to pick which car is better I would choose the Vette. Road and Track magazine rated the Vette higher than the mustangs, porche, and viper, for overall performance.

As someone mentioned, it's kind of like comparing apples to oranges, as those two vehicles aren't meant to compete, however, with all things being equal, and if price was no object, I'd always choose a vette. The new ones are actually carbon fiber and lighter than previous years, and the technology is up there. Someone mentioned the Shelby mustang at 500 hp, but then theres the z06 vette at 505 factory, let alone a Lingenfelter Corvette, the chevy equivalent to Saleen, that is building powerplants that kick the horsepower all the way up into the 700-800 range.

As far as handling, there is no comparison, so if you're talking stock, the basic question you need to ask yourself is this... do you want to go real fast in a straight line? Check out a mustang. But if you're talking road courses, a vette will smoke pretty much any american car on the road.

If you're comparing the Saleen modifications, then you have to again compare apples to apples, so Lingenfelter vettes have the saleen by several hundred horsepower, so the saleen mustang is out-muscled, out-handled, and left in the dust.

As a classic Camaro restorer, it pains me to say this, but the Mustang is a better all around car. As mentioned, they are apples and oranges. Take them to the dragstrip and the Vette wins everytime, hands down. Drive them everyday, maintain them, pay repair costs over a 5 year period, and the Mustang wins hands down.

I'm always impressed at how comfortable the Mustangs are. And with the automatic transmission and differential improvements over the last 5 years, even the V-6 has some impressive punch from a stop.

One of the big car rating surveys a couple of years ago actually rated the 2004 Mustang V6 as the most reliable car on the road!

But it all comes down to what you want. If brute power and performance is what you seek, go with the Vette. But if you want the better all around car, comfortable, fun, and more affordable, go with the Mustang.

You are comparing apples and oranges. The Mustang was never meant to compete with the Corvette. The Ford Mustang was the competition for the GM F body. (Camaro & Firebird) Corvette is superior in every way, except for price tag of course.

If both were the same money I would take the Corvette in a heartbeat, but for the price tag on each, the Mustang is a better deal.

The corvette is obviously better, it has always been a true sports car that has always had superior technology and performance for its time. The mustang has always been an affordable sports coupe with marginal technology and performance. They cannot be easily compared. I would say that the corvette is probably overall a better value considering longevity and resale value.

There is no question the Corvette is a better car. Not only is it faster, but it's made with more quality materials than the mustang. The price tag also reflects it's superiority

I am a Mustang girl all the way. They are way more macho looking than the Corvette. Vettes are kindy girlie looking.
