Angels and demons inhabit another sphere, the spiritual is other than the physical world.
Dolphins, whales and squid communicate with each other over long distances...pretty intelligent, I'd say, and they're not human.
Parrots have been shown to have the intelligence of a toddler.
Apes not only are able to communicate in sign language if taught, those who have learned it have been seen to teach some signs to their offspring.
That speaks for an interesting level of intelligence.

well, intelligent is as intelligent does.
Take a dolphin, considered to be a very intelligent creature, or a monkey. We consider these creatures to be intelligent because we can communicate with them. we judge their intelligence by our own and our own lifestyle (how far up our own arses are we!) But take the common ant, can't communicate with us at all, but if you look at the way they live, in their own habitat, they are very intelligent, and very strong.
As for elves and such, dunno. The ghosts can be explained by all time existing. What I mean is, if you see a Victorian lady sitting by the fire darning her socks, that is because, in her time she was really sitting there, we see it because all time exists at the same time. Usually, it does not overlap, has it's own little space, but there are pockets of 'time' where it's like a gateway into other time zones. Sounds cool huh? just a theory of course.

If we define intelligence as the ability to comprehend; to understand and profit from experience. It has been demonstrated that certain animals like chimps and dolphins learn from experience, can use tools, communicate and work in teams and they can solve basic problems.
