While I do not adhere to the beliefs of either group, there is a consistency in the Catholic Church that is lacking in most Protestant religions. I could go through a long list of things where I feel that Catholics are not rational in their assumptions, I can find very few areas where their beliefs do not follow rationally if you accept their assumptions.
Much of this has to do with the fact that so much of the Christian faith follows from the philosophical works of Augustine and Aquinas -- who were both very rational (given their beliefs). Protestants do not realize this and accept some of their results while rejecting others.
The fact that Protestants rejected a portion of the Bible that had been used for over 1000 years complicated matters. Many Catholic beliefs (e.g., Mary's virginity. the belief in purgatory, etc) follow from those books.
While I beleve that their beliefs are more consistent, the fact is that Catholics have learned from their mistakes (well -- from some of them). Their opposition to scientific work in the 1600s has taught them a lesson. They correctly realized that they need to reinterpret certain religious beliefs to conform with scientific facts (like evolution).

Depends whether you're talking to Catholics or Protestants. A fanatic is a fanatic, no matter what religion.

absolutely
see Taranto's very thoughtful answer below which expounds on my answer. Aquinas and Augustine are in fact the key. And for those Protestants who always claim that Catholics don't study the Bible, are you kidding me? Yet another example of the smug smarmy "know it all" approach of fundamentalist Christian conservatives who think that they "own" the Bible. That response in and of itself answers your question

The early Church was unequivocally Catholic. Through the study of Scripture and the Church Fathers, we see that, not only is the Catholic faith biblical, Catholicism is Bible Christianity par excellence.

I find that they are a lot more liberal than protestants, because they are not encouraged to go to bible studies thus they are not biblicaly grounded in their faith. They consider the Church Fathers the Authority, not the Bible.
