Muslims are muslims and will remain such. Christians are christians and will remain so. Some are atheists, some are agnostics, etc. Some may change whithin...
But in the end, what is the point of discussing this, if most of the 'faiths' base their beleif in just that, faith.....so discussion is irrelevent---because if you have faith in your religion, then its based on faith, and discussion cannot sway you to another faith. Besides, 'God' can take many defintions--so how can you discuss 'God' if he is already pre-defined by faith? God is defined in 'general', as a 'higher power' than ourselves---this could mean a number of things: a concious entity, it could mean a cosmic force that orders the Universe, it could mean 'the way' as described by taoism...
so what is the point of discussing religion? when all definitions are tied to faith---and most of it is irrelevent in that we cannot prove anything...therefore, discussion is irrelevent.

The point of discussion is to learn and clear up misconceptions. Education can create understanding and tolerance, which makes it a safer and happier community for everyone. Not everyone discusses religion with the intent of conversion. I have no intent of converting anyone, but I am a religion student (I graduate in the spring), and I would like to teach the subject sometime.

Why did Jesus preach to the Jews who were God's chosen people. He had an important message.
You need more than faith, the bible says faith without works is dead. If you truly feel you have something important to say, you should share it with others as Jesus did. Granted most don't want to hear it, but everyone can't be right. God has given us a mind to think through and research things to find out whats right.
Sometimes discussing different beliefs, will answer a question you had not been able to answer on your on.

Discussing religion is not "irrelevant" as you say.
Discussing different religions brings knowledge, understanding, and acceptance to those of other faiths. To ignore other faiths would be to pull the blanket over your head and thus not have a complete understanding of the world around you and why people do the things they do. Only people with narrow minds would think the world should ignore religion because it isn't important.

Discussions need not be only about converting someone. Many of us enjoy learning about other faiths and philosophies and understanding how our neighbors think.
As a former person of faith, now a Humanist, I can attest that people can and do change. These discussions can and do have an effect. If nothing else, they remind us that our way of thinking is not the ONLY way.

Why do you Ask!
You use the word FAITH.
Try explaining why humans are here! For what purpose? Why this ex-cerise of coming here for less that a breath of time and then leaving?
Every thing in existence (NATURE) has a purpose, supports something else. With out its presence something else would either die or cease to exist! No exception, except with Humans!
Humans support nothing in nature, nothing requires the presences of humans or any thing that humans do! All human works get destroyed with in a breath of time, NEVER to be regenerated again by nature! So, why Humans?
Since Nature only creates and sustains what Nature needs and creates nothing just to show, then the source has to be above Nature! What if, for communication sake we use the word GOD?
Belief? Look at your self and ask are you here? Why? For what reason? For whom? Keep in mind, neither man nor nature put you here! Nature does not need you, and man could not create you!

People might be looking for other opinions, besides, it's fun. Imagine some people discussing Thor and Odin as if they were real, can you see the fun? You should have started with atheists, they are the least likely to convert.

That's a good point. But the discussion needs to happen because increasingly it's clear that religion may destroy humanity.

Interesting question.
Most likely, people want to prove that THEIR religion is the RIGHT religion. They feel the need to try and convince everyone else that their way is the only way. So they keep trying to prove that they are correct.

Because God is exciting! How the way that he loves us, the thoughts that he has for us! How could you be so ignorant and blind as not to see that the heavenly father is in love with YOU!?
