I am shocked at the number of STUPID answers to this question, thought I really shouldn't be. People fear what they don't understand and it is painfully obvious that a large majority of people do not understand squat about Catholics.

Priests can not marry because it is the rule of the Church, so they can better provide for the members of the Church.

A long time ago, priests were allowed to marry, however when they died, it was commonly believed that the property of the Parish was their personal property and it was given to the children. It was also used to pay debts and often just given away to the ruling monarch for favors.

The Vatican put a stop to this by saying the priests can not marry. If one doesn't marry and children show up after the death, then the child(ren) are not entitled to property or money because they are not legitimate heirs.

If you anti-Catholic "Christians" would just to a little research on your own you would be far better off. You may even realize that there is more in common with Catholicism than you have thought or been told by your anti-Catholic pastors.

St. Paul mentioned in the bible that it is better to stay single to serve only the Lord. Jesus said that there are those who will not marry for the sake of the kingdom. It is much easier to go and do the lord's will when you are not married- if you respect your spouse you will have to discuss it with them, and that will hinder the will of God."An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, and he is divided" (1 Cor. 7:32-34).Celibacy is a discipline, not a dogma. This means that the Church could change the rule. In fact, there are a few instances when the Church has allowed married clergy, such as with some Eastern rite clergy and in the case of some Protestant ministers who converted to the Faith. These, however, are the exception.

They already have a bride- the church
they also have many children- the flock
The Lord knows it takes much strength to be a good husband and farther and would interfere with the duties of the priest and His responsibilities which are very great in the representation of Christ.

The history channel said it first happened (edict of celebacy) during the Crusades. A time when the Pope (Holy Emperor) asked the Knight to Fight in a distant land.

The Knights protested, "We are not going leave our wives here with those horny priests".

So the Pope ordered all the priests to take an oath of celebacy.
