It could be nothing more than the surface - he's realized that (to him or his family and friends) a promise ring is a waste of money or simply too soon.
If he's still in high school, his parents may want him to wait before making that big a commitment, or perhaps they just figure he ought to wait until he can afford a real engagement ring. Or maybe his friends just wouldn't stop ribbing him about being whipped?
Why don't you ask him? Best way to find out.

Taking into concideration the ages of parties involved, Id say he is right to do what his heart and mind tells him to do. Isnt it better if he does it (presents the ring) in his own time and way? Don't join the peer pressure group with pulling him one way or another. Understand it is HIS desision and support him either way. If they are to spend eterinity together, then they can wait until the right time and not push the inevetible. Promise rings are just that. A PROMISE. What kind of man makes a promise he's not sure he wants to keep? I say good for him.

If he's still at the point in his life where he lets his friends "talk him out of something" and it's a big decision like this, it's either of 2 things;
1- he's immature and his friends influenced him unjustlly
2- he's just not ready for this kind of committment
So, bottom line, she's disappointed, but better cold feet now than after they are engaged, or married, and he thinks it's a mistake. He can still give her the ring in the future, but it's harder to "undo" it later if he decides it was a hasty decision.

The sad truth is that...guys will be guys. Though i dont know him, he may be saying one thing but inside he is really scared of a step as big as getting married at that point. Maybe he thought that she would think that by giving her the ring it was a 100% for sure that they were going to spend his whole life with the same person. Men are men...sadly

Heh. Maybe she needs to give him a bit of a push... and get him a ring. I don't see a problem with men receiving gifts from women, nor do I think its tacky for a woman to make a move if the man is hesitant. From the sounds of this particular situation, it seems the guy is just getting cold feet and needs some encouragement.
Good luck!

They both sound awful young that they have to rely on what their friends tell them. A mature couple will do what they want - and not worry about what their friends think.
its probably a good thing that no rings were given, it doesnt sound like he is mature enough for a serious relationship.

Maybe his not ready to take that route right now. and he feels bad that she gave him a promise ring. I think his just not ready to accept a promise ring right now.

I think that he gave it back because he didn't want to give it to her anymore.... That's the obvious reason... But you should just tell her to talk to him and have him explain to her why he took it back because if she is all depressed over something that little, then what if he break up with her.. she might do something really drastic
