I have a 9 month old cairn terrier who is constantly biting us. Does anyone have any ideas of how to correct this problem? We pick up something off the floor, go near him when he is eating, or when he has something that he should not have, this is when he bites us.

We had a dog with this problem when it was younger and yes you have to nip it in the butt now!! When the dog is eating is a big thing!! You should always be able to take food from your dog,

Step one

Just you and your dog: put done food in a bowl when the dog starts to eat reach down and take the food, if the dog snaps at you, grab the dog make it go on its side and hole the mussel to the floor. You are showing the dog that you are bigger. Once the dog calms down. let it up and give it the food. Keep doing this until it understands.

You may have cause the problem to get worst by jerking back and not punishing him/her. Hope this helps it worked with mine!

not a expert on Cairn terriers. Would first suggest you study up on the breed, if you have not. Possibly look on net for info and a breed club where you can talk with other owners.

Did you free feed him as pup, food bowl full all the time? One reason we encourage so as to not become food/treat aggressive.
As mentioned by others here, you have to stop the behaviour now. Always keep your tone low and firm and positive. Take charge by changing your approach and attitude, not physical.

Refer to the answer concerning rolling him onto his side/back and interacting with him in this position. Well stated reply.

When my dogs were puppies one of them bit my dad when he went to pick up something off the floor...and no word of a lie, my dad bit his paw back. The dog never bit anyone one again. Im not saying you should do that...but the most impotant thing to remember when training a dog of any age is to stay consistant. It seems like your dogs very territorial, he has to learn that hes NOT the leader of your pack. Whenever he does something bad give him a same punishment, wether it's a stern no or a light tap on the nose. Puppies are kind of like children in the sense that they have to learn what is wrong and be able to know that when they do that there will be consequences.

He's bordering on aggression..... grab him by the collar or scruff of the neck before trying to take something away from. This way you have control of him. Take away whatever he has and give him something that is ok for him to chew on.

Food aggression is an entirely different subject. You need to get a grip on this behavior before someone gets bitten. Find a trainer that deals with aggression issues.

Your family is his pack and you have to teach him you are the leader, not him. Easy ways to do this... Copy what leader dogs do when another dog challenges them. When he bites flip him over on his back and hold him on his stomach firmly until he calms down and looks away. Also play with him in this position, lay him on his back and pet his stomach calmly.
Also try to feed him AFTER he watches the family eat. This will tell him he's not at the top of the food chain in your house!

Most puppies bite while they are teething, but the dog should no longer be doing that at 9 months old. You should look into obedience training.

your puppy is no longer considered a puppy. He is a young adult. The food aggression is something that should have been worked on while he was a pup. You can try getting him into a manners class. It may not be too late. However, your dog may not be suited for your family. Especially, if you have small children. It sounds like he might do better in a home with only adults and no other animals (due to food aggressions)

Grab him gently by the snout (grip) & in a dicipline tone say NO.Then give him a rawhide chewie. Never get angry or hit your dog,,that will break their trust in you & dogs dont listen to people they dont like. You may roll up a newspaper & swat your hand to disapline while saying NOno.Be consistent. He will eventually learn.Give him toys,,balls,,chewies. If something is in his mouth,,he cant bite or bark altho some dogs do know the trick of barking with a ball,,lol. ;O)

put a muzzle on him and train him not to bite. u are the owner u are in charge. pop him on the noze or spray him with water. if he continues to be aggressive then u might have to get rid of him or send him to pup school. puppys are natuarally playful but they grow out of it. it is your job to teach them though. spend more time with him and teach him things. reward him when he is good and punish him when he is bad. he will soo catch on and learn from it. dogs are intelligent creatures as well.
