Although the internationalization of Jerusalem was a very old suggestion (it preceeds the creation of Israel) such an idea would solve nothing. The fighting is not over Jerusalem. Its over the fact that Israel exists and some Arabs can't accept it.
For the record, Vatican City is not an internationalized city so the analogy is not correct.

If we had a slim chance for this work! today it will not happen. It will not work as long as people who wants it all, or nothing at all. The Iranian president want to erase the Jewish people, or Israel from the face of Earth. Muslims see it as it belongs to them only and no one else. To them it does not matter that Jerusalem is important to all three religion, to them they have the right, and everyone else got none. They also tell you that we will let them live there under their rule if it ever happen. Like what happened in Turkey, convert the Churches to Mosques and the Temples probably will be burned down just as they did in Gaza last year.
Neutral government will not fix it. The Muslims consider it a Muslim land. Never mind that Muhammad was never seen there, never mind that the only reason they consider it holy is because of the presumable over night trip from Mecca to Jerusalem then to Heaven!
I am not Jewish, but I think it is in a better hands than the other two. There are a few problems having the city under the Israelis hands, but it is better than with the control of the Muslim or the Christians, and I am a Christian. The Arab Christian are not strong and give up easily to others, mainly the Muslims. If you learn their history, you will know why. The Muslims with all mighty equality talk! basically when it comes to them and others right it is mosty talk. As long as they are getting the better deal, you will not have complete rights in that or any other town controlled completely by the Muslims. Look around, and you will see I am right about this one.
Jerusalem Belongs to Israel and the Muslim refuse to accept that. That is why you will see more bombing and more people dying for the little city.

Jerusalem is one of many cities in the country of Israel. Vatican City is a an independent country of just 1 city, Vatican City, which is completely surrounded by another country. Vatican City is not in Italy, it is just surrounded by Italy.

No. Jerusalem is the holiest city to the Jewish people. Mecca is the holiest city to the Muslims. Rome is the holiest city to the Catholics.
That leaves Jerusalem for the Jews.

In 1948 Harry Truman (unsuccessfully) proposed to create a three-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue. The third 'state' being directly what you are proposing, except being governed by some sort of International Authority.
It's a shame that when Israel was created, they forced the residents of Palestine out of their homes and set them up with sub-standard living in outside areas, and then moved into the homes they had just stolen. It's for this reason that Muslims currently despise Jews.
