First off, you need to make sure your current hard drive has free space for Linux to sit. Depending on the usage and version of Linux you may not need that much space. If you have this, then back up any important files on WinXP, and follow the Linux install instructions. Just place Linux in the free space (ext3 or reiser fs) and plug away... You can then configure LILO with the WinXP boot partition information, or it may do it itself (I can't recall).
If you do not have any free space, a program like Partition Magic, can create it real time w/o loss of current Windows data. I'm not sure if the Linux partitioner can...
Another option is to install Linux on a Windows partition...

You will either need a 2nd hard drive or a secone partiton. You could also get a product like VMWare, and install it that way. It is a window that you can run in windows. It acts like a seperate computer. I use it all the time. it will be a little slower then normal, but not that bad.

you'll need to partition hard drive. XP goes on the first partition, Linus on second. Otherwise it would not work.
