Umm .. class ring? How old are you? Well some people know instantly.. that would be my grandparents.. who were married fro more than 50 years..
and others.. just are in love with the idea with being in love...
judging from your response.. I would say that you fit into the second example and not the first...
Just be honest.. tell him that word means a lot to you, so you will not say it until you are sure that's how you feel...
I assume that you are interested in him, on more than a friend level... because otherwise why would you be with him??
