I am afraid, I will have to disagree with the other respondents. I am a merchant and I can tell you, if your debit card is a Visa or Master Card branded debit card, my agreement with Visa & MasterCard specifically prohibit me from charging any kind of fee to the customer for use of the card. Plain (non-branded) debit cards may have other rules.

Good Luck

A merchant can charge whatever fee he wants, but he may not get much business if his competitors don't charge a fee or charge a lower fee.

I'd like to see the 'no fee' clause superschupp mentioned. Even if it is in there, I saw a sign at a flee market booth that sounds like a loophole. It read "All marked prices include a 3% cash discount. This cannot be applied to card purchases."

Yes, but I believe you must be notified and approve of the fee before the transaction is processed.

Yes they can, and why not, they have to pay a fee for running your debit!

They can do what they want. They have to take a discount when they turn the card receipts in so it is only fair. THey are in business to make money not to provide free stuff to you.

Yes as long as they inform you of the chaarge. It is not unlike an ATM fee. But you can take your buisness elsewhere.

Sorry.
