I was never like other kids when I was in high school who wanted jobs at 16 or earlier. I put it off and put it off as long as I possibly could. When I finally was forced by my parents to get a job I spent the whole summer crying in the car all the way to the job. I was terrified of spending numerous hours imprisoned without escape and terrified of being asked to do tasks that I was not ready to do. This fear never eased like I was told it would. Any thoughts?

i dont have an answer as to why youre like that, but I can tell you, I'm the same way. I know youre not a lazy person because I'm not either. I want a job, and I want to be making my own money, but when I get out there, I freak out, feel like I'm trapped for hours on end, and I cant wait to get back home. I think it's just because I was homeschooled, and I spent so much time at home, in front of the computer, that when I finally went out and got a job it seemed like too much. My first job was at an after school program...it was about 2 hours a day and i found I could handle that. My second job was at an animal hospital, cleaning and taking care of animals. This also was about 2-3 hours a day and it wasnt that overwhelming. I still couldnt wait to get home but It was more doable. My third job was full time and I hated every second of it. I cried my first day and 3 weeks later I quit. I suggest for now just getting a part time job and easing yourself into it. Try thinking that while youre stuck there, thousands and thousands of other people are stuck at their jobs too (because sometimes it feels like youre the only one going through this). Try making fun out of your job. I know it wont be easy because its hard for me too. But I guess we just need to suck it up..and deal with it. If you make friends at your job, maybe it wont be so hard for you. At my last job i was allowed to carry a radio with me which made it much easier and made the time go faster for me.

It is hard to leave the comfort of your home but we all have to do it. If you really cant or dont want to try finding a job you can do at home. theyre not easy to come by but they are out there. I know a lady who goes to rummage sales and gets decent looking stuff, and then sells it on ebay. This is how she pays tuition for her child (at a private school) every year. You could try that, or a data entry job. But remember that a job isnt prison. It may seem over whelming but you arent really *trapped* there. You can try it out. if you dont like it you can quit. I know its hard, like I said, I'm the same way. We just need to get used to being out of the house...and remember start off small...with a part time job or something..that way it wont seem like SOOOOO much all at once.

You gain confidence in yourself by doing the work expected. It takes a little going to edge at first but as you do the things asked of you in the work setting then you'll see that you are able and competent and can move on to more responsibility. You may have had strict, critical parents who critiqued your every performance in school or otherwise. Just because your family was like that it doesn't mean the whole world will be like that.

None of what you stated is mental illness. Few people like to work. The key is finding what you will enjoy doing. Having a aptitude test done will make all the difference. I do not believe you have a fear of working, but perhaps a fear of leaving the safety and security of your family home. This is normal. Being a responsible adult is hard.

There are many interesting jobs where you won't feel imprisoned or too anxious. As you give no clue as to what you are interested in, I may suggest that you figure out things you like to do, things you are good at and do some research.
Good luck :)

You need to find a job that you feel would intrest you.

If you do a job that you do not want, you can study so that you can do a job you would love.

Do you want to be a doctor for example? Think about this.
