My puppy is a germain shepard husky malamute, she is 19 weeks and is getting spayed on the 4th I also plan to have her dew claws removed. Is this really necessary? She does use them when she plays and to hold her bones. I hate to have her in pain from being spayed and her claws cause the healing process is much longer on her claws. What would you do?

I had my German Shepards dew claws removed when she was spayed as well. She still holds on just as good as she ever did when she had her claws. It depends on if they are loose or not. Sometimes they get snagged on things and rip which is a lot more painful than getting it done under anesthesia and with pain meds. It really is up to you but the younger they are when you do it the less painful it is for them. I have one dog with dew claws and one dog with out. The shepard is my husbands dog and he prefers no dew claws because when they jump up and scratch you they use their dew claws to hold on better and he doesnt like it. I dont mind either way, but I would recommend it if they are loose and kind of hanging and arent firm and feel like bones in it. But that just me. Good luck and watch out cuz my Shepard ripped out her sutures when she had them and had to wear an e-collar.

And just FYI dogs can have dewclaws on both front and back feet, and there are pain meds that you can get to help her. Just remember that if you dont do it if they snag them it is a lot more painful than having them surgically removed.

you didn't state what breed of dog your puppy is- in some breeds- dew claws are "required"( for show purposes- and such is stated in the breed standard) as is the case for Newfoundlands..... and some other breeds. But if this pup- is not going to be shown, and you feel that the dews will hinder the dogs well being( like catching on things and risk being torn off)... then have the dews removed when you have the pup spayed or neutered........ rear dew claws usually only require a stitch or two- but front dew claws, may require major surgery--- as the bones become stronger and thicker as the puppy matures... so these dews will be harder to remove and will cause the pup major pain upon removal...( breeder should have removed them when the pup was days old).. good luck to you and to your new puppy... please discuss this procedure with your veterinarian-- the longer you wait- the harder it will be on the puppy.

Given the choice, I'd have them removed. I've had several dogs who have ripped their dew claws while playing and it's not only very bloody, it's painful. Then there's the healing process - to me it makes sense to have it done if the puppy is going to be under anesthetic anyway.

We always have the dew claws removed on ours. But we do them when they are about three days old.
It is well worth having it done.
I had a doberman who still had his and he used to rip them partially off every so often. It hurt and he bled and it was a mess.
I would have them removed and do not worry the area will heal really fast and you are preventing pain in the future.

Most people have them removed. They no longer serve a purpose and often snag on things and get yanked out causing great pain. Also the nail grows very long and curls back into the paw if ignored.

if there is no medical reason such as she's caught them on something and they are hurt do not have them removed. it's a misconception that these need to be removed on dogs. this is painful for them, often they will chew out the stitches and you will have problems with the incision. this is for the dewclaws, YAY for you on having her spayed, that is a neccesity, the dewclaws are for looks, and her breed mix usually does not tend to have problems with dewclaws. just make sure you keep the nails trimmed to they don't catch on anything. she is too old to have the dewclaws removed, this should be done when they are 2-3 days old if it needs to be done at all. just have her spayed, the removing of dewclaws will just be unnecessary pain for her and a pain in the you know where for you too.

as for aussie's response, i find my big toe is nothing but a problem i am constantly stubbing it on things, should i remove that too? don't fix something if it's not broke is a general rule. i find if you keep your dog's nails trimmed and the dewclaw is not a loose dangly one, then more than likely you will never run into trouble with them. but if you cut them off and they are connected with bone, then you can assure yourself trouble.

The dew claws are on the back paws and need to be removed. I am trying to picture her holding bones with them . Best to do it while she is under the anesthesia from her spay.

If they're nice and tight, then there's no reason to remove them. If they're loose and dangly they should come off. Discuss this with your vet.

I don't remove dewclaws on my bassets, as they are never a problem. But as a groomer I see lots of problems with loose dewclaws getting caught & torn on things.
