Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help my dog's ear stand up. One of his ears is up and stays that way. His other one flops over, every now and then it will stand up but only for a few seconds. Any suggestions for me to help train his ear to stay up? I was told that if they are not standing by 8 months then I need to do something about it. Thank you in advance for your help.........Merry Christmas to everyone and I hope you have a very Blessed New Year................

I've had German Shepherds all my life. Two out of the six or so I've owned had an ear that wouldn't stand up. Never had any problems with it.

I'd just accept it as a "quirk" of that particular dog. Looks adorable really.

If the dog is intended as a show dog, it won't be accepted with a floppy ear. Taping the dog's ears can help it to stand, but as a rule, this must be done at 6 months in order to have any effect. If you're interested in this, see the source links listed below.

My parents had a shepard that had one ear standing and the other took till it was 12 months old to stand up. I dont think at this stage it is a problem if the ear is occasionally standing to attention, as it will straighten up when it is ready. If you are concerned phone the German Shepard association in your area and ask their advise, or failing that talk to your local vet.

I heard of having them "taped" up and then it will eventually stand on its own. There's a web site, do a search for german shepherds (I think the site is gsd.com) there's a forum where you could ask questions. Hope this helps.

Sounds so simple.....but really use tape, like duct tape, leave it for a few days or until it works.........then your dogs ears will stand up

are you wanting to show the dog? otherwise there's no reason to make the ear stand up. you don't need to do anything about it, that's how his ears are, it might stand up later or he might always have a "lazy" ear. if you're planning on showing him, techinically there's nothing you are supposed to do to make them stand up because showing for conformation is that his ears should come up naturally. altering this in any way is fraud in the show ring, although it is done. but please tell me you were just misinformed by someone and just wondering and not that it really matters to you if his ear is up or not. please. personally i think that's cute that one ear is floppy.

They do that themselves sometimes, I just walk by, pick up their ear with the palm of my hand and say,"Perk those ears up".They have a habit of expressing dismay or curiousity by dropping one ear. Dog even looks like its saying,"huh, what now?"

My dog had that problem with one ear for a while when she was sick. Take your dog to the vet.

Your best bet is probably to call his breeder and ask them. They should be able to show you the proper procedure.
