as a christian you have been taught that jesus was sacrificed for your sins. first, what are the bible references stating that it was a sacrifice. (references are fine, i'll look them up, but if you feel you'd rather write out the whole verse, feel free). Also, i am curious about the differences between the animal sacrifices of the OT, wherein the animal was given to god by people who knew that's what they were doing, vs. jesus who was killed with no attention given to god. that is, jesus was not sacrificed TO god by someone. he was just simply killed, from their perspective.

this is an HONEST question, please refrain from name calling and sounding frustrated. either answer because you feel you know, or move on.

I understand some might misconstrue this as that i'm on the verge of conversion, but let me not lead you on. i grew up very christian and theology is one of my favourite topics to discuss. i am not going to go back to that life but i enjoy discussing it.

i asked about the SACRIFICE, not about god's love etc. on earth we used to kill animals and give them to god. burnt offereings etc. jesus, this ultimate sacrifice, was killed not as a gift to god, but just killed. doesn't that ruin the concept of it being a sacrifice? everytime you kill a lamb that does not make it a sacrifice. it is only an offering if you intend it to be one.

1 Corinthians 5:7
...For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us...

Jesus was given to _us_ as the ultimate and final sacrifice, freeing us from the demand to make animal sacrifices.

I, however, wonder at the need for any sacrifice at all. What possible pleasure could God derive from His creations being ceremonially slaughtered in what seems to me to be the most painful possible method.

See that's the beauty of God. He's the same yesterday, today and forever more. His ways are not our ways and His thoughts not our thoughts....that's what the Word says. But In God He always doing parallel things....In the old testament the priest would go and sacrifice the sins of the people with an animal once a year, but because before the foundation of the world God knew that Adam was going to ness up , Christ was already in the making. So when Christ was born, He which the bible calls the high priest is basically standing in the shoes of the priest and the sacrificial animal att he same time. So instead of us waiting on blood to be shed for our sins each year. Jesus took that penalty as becoming the high priest and the lamb. That's why He carries the name the Lamb of God. That's just how much God loves you honey. Who would give up a precious thing that means everything to them for people who hate Him. WOW!!! So after that you shold see right there that love conquers all. There's a scripture in the bible that says Love covers a multitude of sin. What that is saying is God love you soooo much, His son died and the blood that was shed from His body covered your sins. So let no one bash you about what you do because your sins are already covered. The only thing about that is when You realize God loved you that much, you start wanting to know Him ore and that's why we as christians should remember. We all are messed up, a christian is someone who is a sinner but has found mercy and graace through Christ. I hate when people make Christians look like big dummies, we just found out that there's love we never knew. And that's the love of God. YOu should know this because we all go through it, have you ever asked yourself what is missing in my life. You may have everything you want earthly but you still long for more of something you just don'tknow what it is. There's no love like God's love. Always remember that. I love you but God loves you more. Be Blessed!!!

The ultimate sacrifice was a person who was free from sin dying to save others.

Jesus spent his time on earth preaching the new gospel and urging people to believe so as to be saved from their sins. He walked the earth for 33 years without sin so that when the time came, and the people rebelled against him, he would be able to have the sins of the world put upon his shoulders to save us.

"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. "

This is not the best explanation - but the best I have right now as I have time restraints.

If there is one thing I have come to learn from my many, many years in college as a theology major, it is that Jesus is one of the most magical characters ever written. More magical than Mickey Mouse and Superman combined! What it all boils down to is that Jesus gives certain (ignorant) people faith, and that works for them. For those of us who cannot rely on an intangible theory such as faith, we need to look beyond the Bible and beyond what man has tried to scare into our brains. The OT and the NT and even the Dead Sea Scrolls all contradict each other. But for those with faith, it is a matter of defining "contradict". I suppose for those of us who really want to know what happens in the afterlife, we just have to wait... sorry i wasn't much help.
