What everyone else has been saying about 20 minutes, and target heart rate and all of that is sound advice. BUT, keep in mind that there are many important reasons for a warm up. They are: increase blood circulation to muscles, produce lubrication in joints, prepare the nervous, endocrine and psychological systems for activity. All of this helps to prevent injury and can take much more than 20 minutes to do. Good signs to look for to show that you're prepped for activity - increased but steady breathing and heart rate, light sweating. During a good warm, you should never be out of breath. If you are exercising to a goal, consider that an injury will really slow down your results, so put effort into a thorough warm up.

Fat burning begins at around 20 minutes after available blood glucose is burned, so even a 10 minute warm up will give you a head start.

Your body will start burning fat after an average of 20 minutes at your target heart rate. Therefore, the longer you spend after 20 minutes the more you benefit.
