If the star was rising in the west that means the earth was spinning backwards or it could have been a ufo.

The word for 'east' in Greek is anatole, which also means 'rising.' When it says that the star was in the east, it should have been translated 'in rising.' In other words, the star was ascending from the horizon to the mid-heaven, in the western sky.

They gospel of Matthew says the astrologers came from the east and said to King Herod ' we observed the star at its rising and have come to pay him homage".
Possibly they came from Persia, Arabia or Babylon.
