dead people don't go to heaven. Enoch and Elijah ascended to heaven alive. Matthew 27:51-53 mentions many resurrected from their graves with Jesus and went to heaven.

So apprently you have to be alive to ascend to heaven. To have an afterlife you must be alive, if you're not, you would have to be resurrected. Same goes for judgement day to receive the death sentence of fire from heaven which erases you from rxistance and cleases the Earth to make a New Heaven and New Earth.

I apologize for the length of this answer.

If you check your scriptures, you find Enoch and Elijah did not ascended to heaven alive.

4000 years had come and gone, millions of people had died, but Jesus at John 3:13 said this:  And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven."
King James Bible

In what way did God ‘take Enoch’? Enoch was apparently in mortal danger, but God did not allow him to suffer at the hands of his enemies. “Enoch was transferred so as not to see death,” wrote the apostle Paul. (Hebrews 11:5) This does not mean that God took him to heaven, where he kept on living. Jesus was the first one to ascend to heaven. Enoch’s being “transferred so as not to see death” may mean that God put him in a prophetic trance and then terminated his life while he was in that state. Under such circumstances, Enoch did not suffer, or “see death,” at the hands of his enemies.

He was not taken to heaven, in view of Jesus’ clear statement at John 3:13. It appears that, as in the case of Moses’ body, Jehovah disposed of Enoch’s body, for “he was nowhere to be found.”

What is meant by the word “heavens” in this case? The term sometimes applies to the spiritual dwelling place of God and his angelic sons. (Matthew 6:9; 18:10) “Heavens” may also denote the physical universe. (Deuteronomy 4:19) And the Bible uses this term to refer to earth’s immediate atmosphere, where birds fly and winds blow.

To which of these heavens did the prophet Elijah ascend? Evidently, he was transferred through earth’s atmosphere and placed on a different part of the globe. Elijah was still on earth years later, for he wrote a letter to King Jehoram of Judah. (2 Chronicles 21:1, 12-15) That Elijah did not ascend to the spiritual abode of Jehovah God was later confirmed by Jesus Christ, who declared: “No man has ascended into heaven but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man,” that is, Jesus himself. (John 3:13) The way to heavenly life was first opened up to imperfect humans after the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ.

Elijah does not die at this time, nor does he go into the invisible spirit realm, but he is transferred to another prophetic assignment. (Joh 3:13) This is shown by the fact that Elisha does not hold any period of mourning for his master. A number of years after his ascension in the windstorm Elijah is still alive and active as a prophet, this time to the king of Judah. Because of the wicked course taken by King Jehoram of Judah, Elijah writes him a letter expressing Jehovah’s condemnation, which is fulfilled shortly thereafter.

The Bible teaches that the dead “are conscious of nothing at all.” They are not alive and have no conscious existence anywhere. The account of Lazarus confirms this. Upon returning to life, did Lazarus thrill people with descriptions of heaven? Or did he terrify them with horrible tales about a burning hell? No.
Think about this too: If Lazarus had been in heaven for those four days, would he not have said something about it? And if he had been in heaven, would Jesus have made him come back to earth from that wonderful place? Of course not!

God made the first man Adam “a living soul.” Gen. 2:7, Adam was a soul. The Bible also says that when Adam sinned, he died. He became a “dead soul,” and he returned to the dust from which he had been made. The Bible also says that all Adam’s offspring inherited sin and death too.

The Scriptural teaching of the resurrection, however, is not compatible with the doctrine of the immortality of the soul. If an immortal soul survived death, no one would need to be resurrected, or brought back to life.

Clearly, according to the Bible, the soul dies and the remedy for death is the resurrection. You enjoy the best sleep ever, until Jesus resurrects you, sometime in the future.

There is no place in the Bible where it mentions dead people going to heaven. Many people have not studied the Bible well enough to realize this.

When a person dies, that person remains in the grave until either the first or the second resurrection. A lot of people mistakenly believe that "a soul" leaves the body.

Here are the clear facts from the Bible....

Because many people don't understand what happens after a person dies, they could more easily be misled about ghosts, spirits, haunted houses and even preparation for heaven itself.

1 Thessalonians 4:16

16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

But even if you're right, does it matter? So people are risen from the dead first, and then ascend--is that substantially different than direct ascension?

The Bible does not mention dead people ascending to heaven because to ascend you do have to be living as you said with Enoch and Elijah, but according to St. Paul the dead will go to heaven, they just don't ascend there.
2Cr 5:8 We are confident, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Our physical bodies do not go to heaven. It is our souls that go to heaven or hell. In the last day when Christ returns to judge the world, then our bodies will be reunited with our souls, then whoever is of the world will be cast into the lake of fire. Those who have been saved by God's grace and mercy will go to heave for all eternity. It depends on if you're saved by God's grace as to whether or not you go to heaven - not the old Roman Catholic belief where you have to 'do good unto your fellow man' to get to heaven. You can't 'earn' your way to heaven. It is only through God's saving grace and the person turning from his/her sins and turning to Christ for salvation. If we could earn our way to heaven, then Christ died on the cross in vain - for nothing. I'll post some verses for you in another answer.

The bible says that when he (GOD) comes back for us that the dead in Christ shall rise first then he will call the ones living in Christ. The bible also says that we were made in his image and God is eternal so we are as well eternal beings. Our Flesh will return to the dirt but our soul(spirit) is eternal.

Yes he did take back his name "Michael", but the name "Jesus" still fits him perfectly. You might be more interested in what's in a name and what names were in Bible times. It described something or someone's qualities more than anything. Michael means "Who is Like God?" and Jesus means "Jehovah Is Salvation".
