Unlike glucose, the body has no sotrage system for protien. Any unused amount will be eliminated by the liver as excess amounts of protein in the blood is toxic and potentailly fatal. Also, the body will only use protien for building muscle (as there are more uses to protien than just builidng muscle) when it is in an anabolic (repair and build) state. This is most commonly when we sleep and rest. Keep in mind that when you take a protein supplement, it takes time for your body to digest it and make it useable in the blood stream. Just how much time depends again, on your metabolic state, the type of protein, what else you've eaten and many other factors. So to try to time protein intake with the time your body needs it is virtually impossible. The BEST thing to do is forget about all this before or after nonsense and just make sure that you have a nice and steady stream of protein in your diet at all times. This is done by balancing every meal that you eat. How do you do this...well, that's a whole other question.

Before and after. Dont eat carbs before the workout because that inhibits GH production and helps prevent muscle atrophy (breakdown). Breaking down the muscle is your ultimate goal. Hypertrophy (repairing) follows atrophy. Hypertrophy is what makes your muscles bigger. After a workout is when the glycogen stores in your muscle need to be replenished. This is where you consume high GI carbs. Pairing it with protein ensures enough glucose and protein for muscle hypertrophy.

Bottom line, drink a protein shake containing about 20 to 30 grams of protein before a workout and then after (within 30 min or so) drink a protein/carb mix containing about 40 to 60 grams of protein and 40 to 60 grams of carbs.

I personally consume 20 grams of protein before and 40 grams of protein and 40 grams of carbs, usually Gatorade, after.

Whatever works for you. When you determine the amount of protein your body requires, you can then consume it any time you want. it'll be used as needed when you perform your exercises and daily activities.
