With all of the sad cases of child abuse that have been documented, I think that people should be forced to undergo some sort of licensing/certification in order to become parents.

YES, YES, YES. You have to a have to have a license to drive a car, but not to raise a child. It makes no sense to me either!!

See all of this is fine and dandy on paper, but are you really going to make someone give up aa child or have an aabortion if they aren't licensed? I can see where you would take a child away from a register child sex offender just because they would be breaking their parole or what not just being around the child. But in everyone elses case, in our goverment this would never pass and would never work. You could also say lets just make the people who aren't licensed get the tubes tied or get vasectomies, but how are you going to pull off getting those people to under go an expensive surgury like that volutarily? The most we could enforce this type of law is in the case of adoption or fostercare or childcare. Even then there are people that fool the system. Just look at those folks from Ohio that had adopted like 11 children and kept them caged and whatnot. Great Idea though, but have fun trying to get it to work.

I am a foster parent and i see kids from all walks of life for various reasons come into care. Sometimes it is too late others they can be saved. In all cases parents have to take a parenting course and a few other courses in order to prove that they are worthy of taking proper care of their kids. In a lot of these cases the parents start off going then they stop for what ever reasons. I believe that in high school it should be made mandatory that you have to take a parenting course to set some sort of guide line to young kids on what it takes to be a successful parent. This would help put an end to abuse and neglect to some of the children of today tomorrow and yester year.

Maybe not a license, but at least a Parental Competency Certification! It may seem cruel, but not everybody is able to be a parent properly. Whether there are mental issues, temperament problems, substance abuse issues, housing problems ... the list could go on and on ... but there should be a minimal standard benchmark. Perhaps some guide line other than understanding the fundamentals of sexual intercourse should be checked before procreating!

i read a true story about a woman whose children all suffered from brittle bone disease ( there bones would break because of the smallest bump) she was charged with child abuse and her children were taken away and adopted!!
she fell pregnant again and terminated through fear of losing her baby again as social services slapped a care order on the chld before it had even been born which ment it would be taken away from her straight away.

very sad but also proves that any form of licensing will have it innocent casulties

as far as mental health goes any body can suffer from it at any point in there life regardless of licensing. a license would prove they were fit parents at the time of it being approved, but cannot safe guard the parent mental health!

Well, I can empathize with the idea and the emotion. But the reality is this would be an exceptionally intrusive government agency. First, it would me some type of forced birth control. Second, who would set the criteria? You and I might agree on many of the necessary criteria, lets say marriage, gainful empoyement by one spouse, certain level of demonstrated capabilities etc. But what if it wasn't us? Perhaps we would be required to accept all secular teachings instead of raising our children the way we like.

Unfortunately, life is messy.

so everyone should be certified to have sex, that's what you're saying. it's pretty rediculous if you ask me and god gives people children for a reason, I'm only 19 and pregnant, i wasn't expecting it but i am very pleased and excited. My fiance and i have our own house and have been through school. Should people like you be banned from computers?? It's you're right. It's everyone's natural right to have children and not everyone has the same ideas on raising a child

Well in the good old USA we have the RIGHT to choose if we have kids. We have the right to choose who we have kids with and we have the right to choose wether we even want to carry the pregnancy to term or not. these are the basic rights of a free society.
Who are you or the governemtn to make life choices like that for me or any other american? What you beieve to be bad may not be to someone else.

Instead of licenses how about we just stop allowing morons to procreate if you don't know enough to not put a baby in the microwave or freezer then you shouldn't be allowed to have kids

No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Think about it,Is a licenced driver always a good driver? Does a marriage licence make someone a good husband/wife? The answer to those questions are no.A licenced parent does not mean a good parent.
