DOCTOR IRENE PEPPERBERG HAS BEEN RESEARCH THIS FOR SOME TIME NOW. SHE HAS A FEW GREYS THAT CAN ARE PRETTY INTELLIGENT. I HAVE USED HER TECHNIQUE TO TRAIN MY OWN, AT 6 MONTHS OLD MY PARROT CAN IDENTIFY DIFFERENT COLORS AND SIZES OF ITEMS. SHE IS ALSO BEGINNING TO TALK. AFRICAN GREYS HAVE A VERY EXPANSIVE VOCABULARY. HOW MANY WORDS CAN THEY REPEAT? AS MANY AS THEY CHOOSE. WHAT'S MORE IMPORTANT IS THEIR ABILITY TO USE THESE WORDS IN THE RIGHT CONTEXT. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO ONE DAY SPILLED A PLATE ALL OVER THE FLOOR, HER PARROTS RESPONSE, "WHAT A MESS!" CHECK OUT THE CONVERSATION ON THE ATTACHED WEBSITE, REMEMBER THAT NIKISI IS ONLY 4 YEARS OLD AND ALREADY KNOWS OVER 700 WORDS :

Your parrot is extremely intelligent!!! He will not repeat what you want him too like a broken record, but instead will observe and watch what goes on around him, and also see the reaction it causes, African greys have the unique ability to not only imitate sounds like phone rings, doorbells, fire engines, etc, but can also speak in different peoples voices nearly exact, even down to the tone of their voice. If you ask him if he needs new bird food while you are feeding him, eventually he will ask you "Need new bird food", when he wants new bird food. It doesn't happen overnight, but in the years to come he will learn to talk, and say things that will blow your mind about how did he know how to say that right then!!! You have a life-time friend there, that as he interacts with you, your family and friends, there is no limit to what he can learn about our human habits!!! Be very careful about saying things, and making rude noises, that may embarrass you if the preacher comes over for dinner!!! My amazon is amongst other things A VERY GOOD BURPER### The other noise I won't mention here but I sure wish I hadn't done it in front of him!!! He can make everyone in the room look around to see WHO did that, and then ask WHO DID THAT, especially right after dinner, when everyone is waiting for the pie and icecream---His sense of timing is always perfect (when it is pretty quiet) and loud enough for all to hear. So mind your manners around him, and never do anything you don't repeated in front of company--- birdman

Honestly, I don't know where the stopping point is for birds, but what I do know is that every bird is different. My macaw, Rio, can say probably 200 different phrases...sometimes appropriately, sometimes VERY inappropriately. There are sometimes that he can just bust out with something that I didn't even know he knew.
But, then, my friend's macaw, doesn't talk at all. I don't know.
As far as Grey's go, have you seen the videos of Einstein? Go to Yahoo, put in Einstein Parrot and do a video search and check that out. It's sweet!

My "Woody" talks in complete sentences, and will hold a complete conversation-doing both sides! LOL
He rings the phone, answers it, holds a conversation, then says good-by and hangs up.
I've noticed he is starting to use the words he knows and make his own sentences.
I would say he knows over a thousand words.
The grey I had before Woody never said a word! It depends on the bird.
