Bearing in mind this is the UK site...

The DfT regulations are currently allowing 'normal' hand luggage to be taken on, but:

- All liquids, gels and pastes must be in containers of 100ml or less (you cannot have under 100ml in a 150ml container, say) and in one (and only one) 1L or smaller, resealable, see-though bag, which must be taken out of your hand luggage at the security checkpoint and presented, sealed to the security officer.

- Baby food and milk, medication and special dietary requirements will be additionally permitted on board, but food and milk must be tasted at the security checkpoint, and medication accompanied by a prescription or medical note.

- You can take liquids on board that you buy after security. However, for many destinations, this must be in a transparent, sealed bag (constantly changing - ask at duty free). In addition, if you are on a connecting flight, you should have a sealed bag, but again, not all countries and airports are allowing even this (again, constantly changing - check when you leave).

- Large electronic items (particularly laptops) must be taken out of handluggage and presented at the security checkpoint.

In terms of the size and number of luggage, this is dependent on the individual airport. BAA airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Southampton) are currently very restrictive, allowing strictly one item of luggage (no exceptions, no handbags, no shopping) through security. This, however, is due to their lack of willingness to recruit security staff, as other airports do not have the same restrictions.

Basically it is the measurements of the item that determine whether it can be brought along as hand luggage. The acceptable size for a carry-on item can be found at the airlines website and I would suggest that you check there first. There are measuring devices at the airport however you do not want to find out you have to send it as checked baggage at the last minute. Remember that there are restrictions on what you can pack in a carryon bag and limits on items such as liquids. They must be in containers no larger than 100ml (3 oz) and fit in a one litre (one quart) plastic ziploc style bag. The bag must also be closed so you cannot stuff a lot of items in there. I am heading down to LA in September for a week and will bring everything I need in my carryon.....hopefully.

you can use any bag that fits within the airlines requirements. Only liquids have to go in a see through bag (normally a sandwich size bag) and only liquids under 100 ml. this bag of liquid must fit inside the hand luggage but will be screened separately

The carry on restrictions have nothing to do with the airlines. The rules are setup and enforced by the TSA and are common to all airports and airlines. If choose to bring liquids in your carry-on, they need to be in travel size containers of 3oz. or less. And all liquid containers must fit in one quart-size clear ziptop bag so they can be screened separately at security. See http://www.tsa.gov for all details. Check out http://www.AllTravelSizes.com for all of your favorite items in the required 3oz or less sizes. Shipping is free on orders over $20 and they even provide the TSA required ziptop bag free with every order.

The best thing ot do is to go to the airlines website and check it out. They have a list of what you can bring on. To be safe you should put al make-up and anything that is a liquid, gel, (lipstick) in your check bag. You can not have a lighter but you can have one book of matches. you cannot have tweezers, little scissors or any type of multi tool thing such as a swiss army knife.

I suppose, the bag has to be some freezer bag with a zipper. But you can carry as much bags as you want. Yet I'm not quite sure about it.

Go to your airline's website, it should have detailed, up to date instructions on what it allowed in your carry on luggage. It differs for local or international flights.

You do need a one quart clear plastic bag for your liquids, creams and gels in your carry-on luggage. Here's the US Transportation Security Administration's website with their list of permitted and prohibited items: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm
