I didn't think that it was considered bad luck. I just think some people think that it is rude for some reason.

I've never heard of it being bad luck, so much as bad manners to wear a hat at the table. I think it goes back to old fashioned good manners that men are supposed to remove their hats at the dinner table.

Supposedly it goes back to the depression era when there was a lice problem. Putting your hat on the table would help spread the lice somehow. I read this in a book years ago. I think it was a polite way of telling someone to not put their licey hat on the table.

It's bad luck to put a hat on a BED...it means a quarrel will arise in the house. You might be thinking it's bad luck to put shoes on a table...that signifies death in the house

Put Your Hat On

I've never thought much into it. But my husband passed away 2 years ago and the night before he expired in his sleep he had laid his hat on kitchen table -something he never did before . I found that very odd. He also told me of his plans of mowing lawn and taking down fence the next day, which were our of his character. Maybe it was a premonition. He complained he was feeling tired the day before.
