Because they are more likely to have a headwind. Prevailing winds blow from west to east, and so help planes traveling in that direction.

The headwinds and jetstream.

When you trabel from NYC to Los angeles you will have heads winds ( wind coming towards the plane )due to jet stream which travels west to east with the rotation of the earth. The Head windsmight slow the plane 20 to 100 mph depending on the strength. When you travel from LAX to NYC you will have a tail wind. Which really means you have winds pushing the plane helping it speed up.

Prevailing headwinds at high altitudes.
Usually a westbound flight is fighting a headwind of 100 to 150 mph or more. Coming back east - the flight has the advantage of cruising along with that same wind.

The jet stream and prevailing winds effect the flight times. When the aircraft is traveling form the east coast to the west they are usually experiencing headwinds, which makes the flight longer.

Hope this helps!

The jet stream (a swiftly-moving air current) moves from West to East. So, if you're flying West to East (e.g. SEA - ORD, LAX - LGA, etc.) you would have a tailwind. If you're flying East to West (e.g. ORD - SEA, LGA - LAX, etc.), you will have a headwind, which will slow you down.

Its because the earth rotates. So when you are moving in one direction the earth is moving with you below so it takes longer. But the shorter flights means the earth is moving towards you so your destination is slowly moving closer to you
