Bottom line is business class and first class are way better in countless ways. More leg room and wider seats are just the beginning. I just flew to Hawaii on first class on United and while the coach customers had to pay for food, we actually had linens for our tray tables and a sundae cart, not to mention all the food and booze you want. There are quite a few factors in the differences between business class and first class including the airline, the route, and the age of the aircraft. The differences can be dramatic. Prices can be astronomical as well. I believe a first class ticket to Australia from Los Angeles is around $17,000 while a business class ticket is $7,500 and a coach ticket is $2600 round trip. However, there are some airlines, and routes where you can upgrade to first class for $50 or so. Alaska Airlines offers this on occasion. If you can afford first class, fly first class. If you can't, request the exit row seat. That gives you the most leg room in coach and is what I do whenever possible. Also, I only fly first class when I can upgrade or buy the ticket using frequent flyer miles, this is fairly common amongst frequent flyers.

Airplanes can have 1, 2 or 3 "cabins", that is seating areas. On flights with 1 cabin its all economy, with 2 its economy and first, with 3 its economy, business and first.

There are several differences in these cabins. In economy the seats are closer together. There are usually 3 seats in row, depending on the plane. Leg room is limited. There rarely is food service. You pay for alcholic drinks. Its not as comfortable.

In business and first you have more leg room, the seats are much more comfortable. Usually there are only 2 seats in a row, so you wont get a middle seat. (There are exceptions to this on a few flights where there is a middle section of 3 seats in a row) The food is much better. The seats recline better, in some case, almost flat. Alcholic drinks are free. You get much more attention. You also pay a LOT more. Its a matter of whats important to you.

It depends if the flight is domestic or international.

But economy is always the cheapest and has the smallest legroom.

Economy on international flights in most airlines the seats recline to become beds, served a very nice three course meal, a greater selection of on demand movies and games.

In first class it is almost like having your own room.

Considering you don't know the difference I would say economy is best for you since business class can be 3 times the cost. Its not cheap

It depends on alot of factors. Type of plane, which airline, and how long the flight is.

On short hops --say from New york to Detroit there is not much of a difference. You get slightly bigger seats. You get to board first. You get free alcohol and better snacks.

On mid ragne hops like from New York to Los angeles it gets better. You will get nice meal served. Depending on the type of plane you may have a video player in your seat. And ussualy the seats are large and recline alot. And the service is very good.

The best is international flights. Everything is even better. Better meals. Sleeper seats. Top notch service. Ect ect.

The bottom line is that its impossible to know exaclt what your service will be like because there are so many variables.

Simply put:
Economy - least expensive with beverage and pretzels.

Business Class - 5 to 8 inches of more leg room (no wider though) with beverage and pretzels.

First Class - plenty of leg room, with wide seats and free drinks of any kind - and most likely a snack or meal.
Oh - you get your own restroom reserved for first class.
But the toilet paper is the same.
