Hi Britanny -

I just responded to your other question about anorexia. I don't mind talking to about my fight against my eating disorder(s) if I think that what I have to say might help someone else avoid the pain that I've lived through. I refuse to talk about numbers - specific weight, calories, etc - and I will NOT give out tips for losing weight. And I'm leaving out a lot of personal detail because it's not appropriate for a tween to deal with. That being said . . .

I first developed anorexia when I was 8 years old. I'm now 32. I wasn't happy with myself or my body or really anything in my life. I started skipping lunch at school to avoid the other kids and to avoid dealing with WHAT I was feeling.

By the time I got to junior-high (7th grade / 11 years old) I was skipping more meals than I was eating. I was still keeping all my feelings to myself and didn't have a way to let it out. It felt like controlling what I ate was a way of controlling my life. My grades went from being all A's to failing. I lost all my friends. And still nobody noticed how much pain I was in.

8th grade / 12 years old - my parents put me into the hospital for 6 weeks to deal with the depression. Still nobody said anything about my eating. I brought my grades back up and continued to lose weight.

12th grade / 16 years old - I barely graduated from high school. I had never dealt with the reasons I was starving in the first place. I continued to starve. My brain didn't have the energy to study. And I didn't care.

18 years old - I FINALLY talked to a therapist who cared enough about me to put me into a hospital for ED's. I weighed about as much as you do now. My hair was falling out. My kidneys were shutting down. My heart was starting to mess up.

19 - 28 years old - Off and on, I continued outpatient therapy. I also worked with a nutritionist. For other reasons, I had a major backslide and ended up in a treatment centre in Arizona weighing less than I did at 18. I had a tube placed down my nose into my stomach and IVs in my arms just to keep me alive. I was almost dead. All my organs were shutting down.

Recently - it's taken a LOT of hard work to turn my life around. I had to learn to gain weight. I had to learn to TALK about what was bothering me. And I had to learn that it's OK to ask for help when I need it.

I now look like a HEALTHY adult. I still have bad days, we all do, but those bad days don't mean hurting myself.

PLEASE talk to a grown-up. Keep talking until you get the help you need. You don't want to deal with this for the rest of your life. I've listed the Something Fishy website again. It has information that can help you.

yes. i am still battling it. It lead to bulimia. Once you start, you cant get the mindset away from you without psychiatric help. Its a disease. I hate to break it to u but if you want to stop being anorexic u need help!! Although you can never truly get it to leave you alone. You will always want to relapse. Its so hard but if u need support with it u can email me if u need to.
