yes, and no.

sometimes a dog eats too fast - and the food comes right back up. it may be that the food is 'expanding' - it swells up when it gets wet in the digestive system and because he didn't chew it - it has to expand somewhere and he 'throws up'.

he also might be sick, and not able to keep food down, if you see pieces of grass in the food, he may have eaten the grass to settle his stomache and he threw up anyway. (grass doesn't 'make' dogs throw up - they eat grass because the grass absorbs excess stomach acid and works like amild antacid) Then sometimes, they throw up anyway.

If he doesn this on a regular basis, but doesn't seem otherwise sick ( and if he eats what he throws up) it probably is that you have a fast eater.

Some things you can do - get a raised food bowl - so he doesn't have to force food UP his throat when eating.

put a ball, bone or toy in his food dish with his food - sometime having to eat AROUND the toy will help him slow down, take smalle bites and not 'gobble'his food.

Feed him smaller portions a couple of times a day, not a whole bunch once a day - this is also to 'slow him down'

Check his food - drop a piece into water and see how fast and how much it swells up. experiment with different foods until you find one that does not have as much 'filler' and doesn't swell up or has smaller pieces, etc. ( I found 'BilJack' food to be of good quality and it doesn't swell up. my dogs LOVE it, too - even the CAT steals it!)

add water and let his food soak and swell up BEFORE he eats it.

I hope he's not sick, but if he isn't acting well, and throwing up - if it doesn't sound like an 'eating' problem - call your vet.

It's not normal for it to throw up. Keep an eye on it and if it continues to throw up (more than one day) or stops eating, call the vet.

The food wasn't fully digested because it takes a while. A lot of dogs just swallow their kibble without chewing it which means it takes a lot longer to digest.

YES, this is normal. Labs eat so quickly they don't do a lot of chewing (I'm sure you've noticed this!) If the dog throws up often, it might be allergic to poultry (yes, all kinds, chicken, turkey and duck). We also tried spreading the food out on a hardwood floor so it would take her longer to eat but the problem was the food allergy. Our dog can only eat lamb or fish. Good luck.

How soon after eating did it throw up? If it was a couple of minutes, I wouldn't worry. They probably just inhaled the food too fast or drank too much water in close proximity to eating food.

If it was 20 minutes or more, it was unable to process the food normally and that is reason for concern. There could be the possibility of an abstructed bowel and it may need to see the vet.

If it only happened once and hes acting ok otherwise, he probably just ate too fast. Put a clean tennis ball in his food bowl (sounds odd, huh?) It will make him eat a little slower since he will have to move the ball around to get to the food! If he keeps up, take him to a Vet ASAP, could be something worse! Good luck!

Well, throwing up isn't so good. As to whether it was digested, that depends on how recently he ate it.

If he ate his food too fast and it came back up on him, that's not a big concern, you'll just need to feed him small amounts at a time until he learns to slow down.

If he throws up again, it's time to see the vet.

Yep. I'll bet your Lab just scarfed it down so quickly that it had no choice but to come back up.

Now if it happens all the time, worry, but once in a great while dogs puke. Just like humans.

My Lab actually runs to the front door to go outside when she knows she's going to be sick. (The food we were feeding her was not working for her, she used to get sick a lot)

If the food looked like whole pieces, then the dog probably didn't chew the food up very well. If the throw up wasn't still formed like dog food then I would say something is wrong with your dog.

They are eating to fast. Literally swallowing it. sit with them a try and get them to eat slower. you should only have to do it a couple of times.
