My cat is of course sick she had surgery today and the vet said her condition was guarded, she would be critical for the next 24 hours. Can anyone give me a little more info on this.

Well my cat has been at the vets for 8 days today they thought that she was poisoned by her flea collar, she has only gotten better but they could not get her to stop vomitting so they did exploratory surgery today and found the string in the intestines and they had to remove some of the intestine and reattach.

Guarded means that things can go either way, meaning they may pass away or they can pull through.

24 hours is usually a good indication of how they will do. If they get a bit better during those 24 hours, then there's a good chance that they will pull through. If they get worse, then there's a chance that they will not.

What was the surgery for? That will be helpful in determining what that means. If your cat was say hit by a car, the shock could make her crash at any moment and the vets will monitor her very closely. If it is something major like that we try not to give false hope saying that she will be ok, because with HBC's at any time there could be complications until the calm down and the shock wears off. If you give me more details I will edit and respond to your info. Good luck and I hope your cat is ok

Well if she had part of her intestine removed they have to see if her body will take to the suturing back the intestine pieces, and make sure there arent any leaks in the suture that can cause the juices from her stomach to leak out. And the procedure is very tricky especially if she has been sick before. I hope everything goes alright. It sounds like your cat is a fighter. I wish you and your cat the best of luck and hope everything goes ok.

I am so sorry that your kitty had to have surgery, my cat had to have a similiar surgery he ate a small piece of a plastic toy, he is relatively young 8 years old, he did really well and was back to himself after a couple of weeks. You and your kitty will be in my thoughts and prayers.

PS: I would agree with the Technician that posted just above me with regard to stages of prognosis. God Bless.

Guarded prognosis means there is a small chance that your cat may be cured or live. There are many new medications and technologies today. I have witnessed many animals survive much longer than many have predicted. Good Luck.

There are four major levels of prognosis in veterinary medicine. The best is good; next fair; then guarded and last poor. The conditions can change from day to day, particularly when our pets are recovering from major surgery.

My thoughts with you and your kitty...
