Why not pay a visit to your Humane Society or ASPCA shelter? They have a lot of dogs just waiting for a home, and usually a very very wide variety of dogs.

What kind of dog would suit your life style. Get a smaller dog if you live in an apartment a larger breed if you have a large place for the dog to play and run. If you really love dogs go to a shelter and adopt there are so many unwanted dogs there and would be your best friend forever! Good Luck.

I would look at your own lifestyle to try and decide. What size of dogwould fit in your home. What temperment of dog. Weather you want a dog that will get along with children or not. Here is a website that can help you find and research different breads:

It doesnt mean you would necissarily buy a dog from them but they have a lot of information. Also alot of the time muts can be healthier and have a better temperment but cannot be used as show dogs.

That really depends on your lifestyle. If you are looking for a small family dog a Pomeranian is a good choice, they are fun and loyal and good with kids, if you are looking for a small one owner dog a Yorkie is a good choice they are fun and loyal but they are not fond of a lot of people around and can be temperamental if there is, If you are looking for a big dog a Black Lab (well any Lab for that matter) are fun and loyal, but VERY high energy and need lots of space to burn it off! I would of to the pet shelter in your area and look at all the different types and then do some research on the ones you liked before buying. GOOD LUCK!!

I agree with Emmy...

go to your local shelter - there are so many dogs taht need homes..

at the very least you can get a sense of different sizes/styles of dogs, hang out, take them for walks and figure out what will suit you best.. although if you love dogs, it will be hard not to adopt one of them!

in my experience - mutts are some of the best dogs. They can be extremely intelligent, healthier than a lot of purebreds and often combine the best features of several breeds. PLUS you are not supporting some evil puppy-mill (of which sadly there are many - if you must get a purebred - go with a REPUTABLE BREEDER, AKC accredation or whatever - they'll cost more but your conscience will be clean.)

How about you start by telling everyone the reasons why you want a dog? Like I want a dog to go running with me. I want a dog to go trainning with. I want a dog to protect my house. Then we can get a better idea of what to suggest.

Well it all depends on your lifestyle and what you're looking for in a pet. I will say I own a shih tzu, and he is the best little dog ever. He's small, so if you're looking for an indoor dog, a small breed like him might be best. Shih tzu's are generally good natured, and they love their people, so expect him to stick close to you all the time. Mine is so easy to take care of and so sweet and he was a cinch to housebreak. Good luck!

There is an organisation called Select A Pet which helps you decide which is best for your living conditions by asking a series of questions about your lifestyle.

I prefer the medium or large dogs.
The small ones are too yappy, possessive and needy.

If you want a large lovable best friend that will keep you happy and warm in winter, without doubt get a Great Dane. You MUST get her from a longstanding breeder with much credentials and that gives you a ton of referals. I did say "her" cause before you get a BIG boy, get used to a small 130 pound female, and get 5 books on training BEFORE you pick her up , then, share a great life with her.

Go to the adoption shelter and find one that you like. If you have an apartment or it's gong to be an indoor pet get something small or if it is outdoors get whatever one appeals most to you. I love my pound puppy. She is so much more loyal and loving then the purebreds that I have owned. She seems like she is more appriciative of having a home too.
