german shepherds will guard you no matter. you do not want to have this dog specifically "trained" to do this, it is their nature to protect. if you guard train her she will do just that and can become very dangerous if you do not know how to handle her. you can take her someplace and have them train her, but what do you do when you get her home? shepherds are smart enough to know what they can and can't get away with and with whom. you need to find a quality training center that fits your training needs and take her to class yourself and you learn how to train your dog. most trainers will tell you, dog training is 80% teaching the human what to do. i love shephers and will own nothing but. you need to figure out if you are a person that should own a shepherd, they are wonderful dogs in the right hands, and dangerous in the wrong ones. shepherds should be calm, loving, loyal and intelligent. not wild and owning your home, and possibly harming your children. you need to be the one that takes her to the training, this will help you develop a close bond with this dog and she will in turn give her life for you just to please you. that is their breed.

Well, first of all, my Mom has a Labrador (bigger than a shepherd) and he was so gentle with my son, but sometimes he would get excited and throw him on the floor. They don't mean to be goofy they just are. Being a guard dog comes naturally to them. Most people beat the **** of their dogs to become more aggressive, this is soooo wrong. If you train your dog the right way (NON AGGRESSION) not only will he be a great family dog but he will also eat anyone that tries to hurt you or your family. It's called self-Confidence, something only a truly loved dog can have. Aggression training in any way will spoil his temperament. If he bites (teething) a lot buy him lots of chew toys. He'll love you 4 that. GOOD LUCK. REMEMBER, A dog is only as good as it's master. Look for a trainer who trains with 0 aggression.

Your puppy is, at 4 months, still a baby! Puppies this age have no common sense and of course she's going to run over the kids. You can train her yourself right now - simple commands like sit, down, stay, come, you can teach her to heel. If you really want to, take her to puppy kindergarten but at this age you can't expect too much from a puppy. Formal obedience classes are very stressful for dogs and she should be much older before she goes. Work with her yourself.
At this age, she can easily learn all the basic commands and you can teach her things like "easy" when she's running around the kids. You can teach her to go slower in the house, there's a lot you can do at this age to help the situation. If she's well socialized and trained with patience now, she'll be a great companion for your kids when she's older and her brains have caught up to her enthusiasm.

PetSmart has good puppy classes. I'm sure there's one in your area. The good thing about their classes is that they'll work with your family so you'll know how to continue to train her beyond the end of classes.
I'd be careful about specifically training her to be a guard dog. You don't want to train her to attack because with children around, she could end up attacking one of them. All you really need to keep burglars away is for the dog to bark if someone is at the door. It's the noise that keeps them away, not aggression.

Take your dog to Alpine safety and talk to Hans, he has been around a very long time and if anyone knows shepherds, he does. Do not listen to people who tell you that just because she is a ashepherd she will protect you and on and on. That is crap. A dog has what it takes or does not. He will evaluate her and do the bedience training for you and IF she has the proper drives, when she gets old enough he can do the protection work for you. you can find him at Alpine safety.com He is in your area. Good luck to you.

If you have a Petsmart store near you, go there. I have found their training classes to be a big help. Shepherds take to training pretty well, so it should work out great for you.
And she's wild and not housetrained because she's still just a baby. As she gets older and you go to puppy classes, that will stop.

Take yourself and her over to PetsMart to the basic and puppy training classes and they will do a great job with her. The trainers will probably want you to bring the kids in too so she can get use to being around them and how to behave with them.
I live in Surprise,AZ and I took my Border Collie over there and truthfully I am very glad I did....It was worth it to me and the family..

If you are not sure where to go, go to your petstore and ask. Also make sure you go one of the classes to observe how the trainer acts around the dogs!
